Late Surge Lifts No. 9 Princeton Over Field Hockey

11/2/2013 2:13:00 PM

Box Score PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 9 Princeton field hockey team scored three late goals to blow open what had been a tightly contested game and defeat the Big Red, 4-0, this afternoon on Bedford Field in Princeton, N.J. Senior goalie Carolyn Horner made 13 saves to keep Cornell in the contest but the visitors were not able to find the back of the net.

The first half of play was a back-and-forth contest with each team generating quality chances. The Tigers held the slim edge in shots (11-6) and penalty corners (5-4) over the first 35 minutes and both goalies were outstanding with Horner and Princeton's Anya Gersoff making six and four saves, respectively.

The home team finally broke the stalemate in the 22nd minute as Julia Reinprecht sent a pass from the top of the circle to Cat Caro, who was waiting at the left goalpost, and struck the ball past Horner.

With 13 seconds to go in the half, Mallory Bannon made a defensive save to send the teams into the intermission of a 1-0 game.

The second half, however, was all Princeton as the Tigers finished the game with a 26-6 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corners. Cornell did not put a shot on goal in the second half.

Back-to- back goals over a three minute span from Kelsey Byrne and Michelle Cesan put the game out of the reach and a tally by Allison Evans in the 61st minute accounted for the 4-0 final.

Cornell (9-7, 3-3 Ivy) plays its final game of the regular season next weekend when it travels to Hanover, N.H., to take on Dartmouth on Saturday Nov. 9 at noon.
