Shelby Lyman announced her return by knocking down a 3-pointer on the Big Red's first possession as Cornell led for all but 41 seconds in a 59-49 victory over Drake in the opening round of the Seattle University Delta Dental Thanksgiving Tournament. With the win, Cornell improves to 4-2 on the year and will face the winner of tonight's Coastal Carolina/Seattle matchup on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 6:00 p.m. PST.
Freshman
Nia Marshall recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 11 rebounds, while DiMagno finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. DiMagno was nearly perfect, connecting on 4-of-6 from the field, 2-of-2 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Freshman
Kerri Moran recorded a career-high 14 points, thanks in large part to making 10-of-12 free throws during the final four minutes of the game to seal the victory. She also handed out a team-high four assists.
Drake (2-4) had a trio of player in double-digits, with Kyndal Clark finishing with 12 points, while Lizzy Wendell and Liza Heap chipped in 10 apiece. Heap also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Bulldogs shot slightly better from the floor, hitting 36.2 percent (21-58) overall, while Cornell connected on 35.2 percent (19-54). The Big Red was better from beyond the arc at 37.5 percent (6-16), as Drake hit just 20.8 percent (5-24). Cornell held a significant advantage in free throws, making 15-of-23 (65.2 percent), but that was due in large part to a 12-of-14 performance over the final four minutes as the Bulldogs fouled to try to mount a comeback. Drake made 2-of-4 free throws during the game.
Cornell held a significant 46-33 advantage on the boards, including a 19-10 edge on the offensive glass. Both teams were plagued with turnovers with the Big Red finishing with 18, while Drake had 16.
The Big Red got out to an early 19-7 lead with just over eight minutes gone in the first half, with Lyman,
Stephanie Long and DiMagno hitting treys, while Marshall and
Nicholle Aston racked up six points in the paint.
Drake came alive over the next five minutes and cut the Big Red's advantage to just four points, 23-19, but DiMagno answered with a layup and a late trey by
Megan LeDuc sent Cornell into the intermission with the 28-25 advantage.
Both teams struggled in the early moments of the second half, but a DiMagno 3-pointer pushed Cornell's lead back to five points (31-26) with just over 17 minutes to play. The teams then traded layups before six unanswered points gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 34-33, with 12:42 showing on the clock. Exactly 10 seconds later, a driving layup from Long opened up an 8-0 run that returned a lead that Cornell would not surrender the rest of the way.
Drake cut the Big Red's advantage to five points with 6:10 remaining in the contest, but a layup from Marshall, off an outstanding pass through the lane by Lyman, ended the threat and the Big Red made its free throws down the stretch to seal the 59-49 victory.
