ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's and women's polo teams got regional competition off to a great start by dispatching their biggest rivals, with the women topping Connecticut 19-13 on Friday evening and the men topping the Huskies 28-10 on Saturday evening at Oxley Equestrian Center. The women improved to 2-1, while the men are now 1-2.
For the women,
Devin Cox,
Anna Winslow and
Elena Wicker started for the Big Red. The early going was close as the teams traded goals. UConn capitalized on some Big Red mistakes and took a 4-2 lead into the second. Cornell closed to within one, but the Huskies then closed out an even second by maintaining their two-goal lead at the half, 9-7.
Emma Eldredge subbed for Wicker in the third and saw Cox and Winslow hit their stride. Tying the score in the first two minutes, the Big Red had the Huskies take their last lead at 12-11. Cornell surged ahead and ended the third up 14-12, then built on it in the fourth to take the chukker 4-1 and the match 19-13. Cox tallied 10 goals, Winslow had eight and Wicker recorded one.
On Saturday, the men brought Nick Stieg,
Nik Feldman and Ignacio Masais into the arena. Feldman scored the first three goals of the match as Cornell jumped on the rebuilding Huskies for a 9-0 lead after one. Stieg took a seat after one to allow
Emerson Bilodeau to play. Cornell continued to dominate and entered the half ahead 17-2. Feldman and Masais gave way to
Carter Loftus, and Stieg for the second half. The third was closer as the Huskies took advantage of the fresh team. The third ended with five goals apiece for the teams as they headed to the fourth with Cornell ahead 22-7. The Big Red would cruise home to the victory at 28-10. Feldman and Stieg each tallied eight goals, Masais had six and Bilodeau and Loftus each had three.
