ITHACA, N.Y. – Hot-shooting St. Francis Brooklyn connected on 12 3-pointers and shot 63 behind the arc to improve its win streak to three in a 78-68 win over Cornell on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Terriers improved to 7-2, while the Big Red fell to 5-4 on the season.
Senior guards
Shelby Lyman and
Aspen Chandler both registered career highs with 20 and 15 points, respectively, while freshman forward
Nia Marshall chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds despite seeing limited action due to foul trouble. Senior forward
Allyson DiMagno grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and finished with four points, three steals and two assists.
SFC had five players finish in double-figures with Jaymee Veney leading the team with 15 points. Eilidh Simpson and Sara Benedetti posted 14 points each, while Leah Fechko and Katie Fox tallied 13 and 12 points, respectively.
In addition to its hot shooting, the Terriers also held the slim edge on the boards, 30-27, but for the third consecutive game, the Big Red's defense pestered its opponent into more turnovers, forcing 18 miscues with 10 steals for 29 points. Cornell turned the ball over just nine times.
Cornell shot 37.7 percent from the floor (20-53), knocked down 21.1 percent from 3-point range (4-19) and made 24-of-30 free throw attempts (80 percent).
Lyman kept the Big Red in the game in the first half, matching her season-best scoring total with 16 points by halftime. Included was a personal 6-0 run in the final 36 seconds, including a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer and three free throws after being hit on a desperation trey with 0.1 left on the clock. She connected on all three to cut what was a 16-point deficit to 10 at the break (43-33).
The Big Red cut the deficit to eight twice early in the second half, but St. Francis was able to stay on top, answering each Cornell run with a bucket of its own. Trailing by 13 points (61-48) with just under seven minutes to play, the Big Red made one final push with a 6-0 run started by Marshall and ended by back-to-back jumpers by
Kerri Moran, but a pair of free throws by Fechko and a deep tray by Simpson pushed the Terriers lead back to double-digits and the visitors made 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch to seal the victory .
Cornell is back in action following a 14-day layoff for exams when it travels to Robert Morris on Saturday, Dec. 21 for a contest at 1:30 p.m.
