NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The women's squash team assured itself of a fifth- or sixth-place national finish at the Howe Cup this weekend with a 5-4 victory over Stanford in the consolation semifinals. Freshman
Brynn Daniels clinched the match for the Big Red, rallying for a four-game victory at the No. 7 spot.
Sixth-ranked Cornell (13-6), which set a program record for victories in a season, advances to the consolation finals on Sunday against host and fifth-ranked Yale. With a win Sunday, the Big Red would tie for the program's best final ranking in its 16-year history.
The Big Red took a 2-1 lead after the first shift Saturday, courtesy of senior co-captains Maggie Remsen and
Jaime Laird. Remsen held off Alexandra Huchro for a four-game win at the No. 6 spot, and Laird won yet another five-game contest at No. 3 over Madeleine Gill.
Cornell then took a commanding 4-2 lead after the next rotation. Sophomore
Lindsay Seginson cruised to a three-game victory at No. 8, and junior
Jessenia Pacheco did the same at No. 2. Stanford won two of the three matches in the final shift, but Daniels' 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 victory at No. 7 proved to be the difference. The Big Red has now defeated rival Stanford in three consecutive matches.
