Bonus Points Send Iowa Past Wrestling, 21-16, at National Duals

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.—The No. 7 Cornell wrestling team was edged out by No. 2 Iowa on Friday night in a dual that came down to bonus points. Each team won five bouts, but the Hawkeyes came out on top with a 21-16 victory. Mike Nevinger (141) and Jace Bennett (197) each notched victories over higher ranked wrestlers in their respective weight classes. No. 1 ranked Kyle Dake picked up a major decision over his No. 13 ranked opponent at 165 pounds, while No. 4 Steve Bosak (184) and Chris Villalonga (149) each won decisions. Cornell finishes its dual season at 14-4 overall while Iowa improved to 20-1.

At 125 pounds, No. 5 Nahshon Garrett faced No. 1 ranked Matt McDonough. Garrett stunned the No. 1 ranked wrestler with a strong double leg takedown off the whistle. The Hawkeye wrestler would escape and added a takedown of his own before the period was over. McDonough chose to start the second period down. He caught Garrett riding high and reversed him. Garrett escaped, but with another takedown and riding time McDonough won an 8-3 decision.

At 133 pounds, No. 2 Tony Ramos pinned Bricker Dixon in 6:11 to give Iowa a 9-0 lead in the team score.

No. 10 ranked Nevinger took on No. 8 Mark Ballweg at 141 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Nevinger escaped from his opening down position in the second for the only point of the period. Ballweg escaped to open the third, but with 28 seconds left in the bout Nevinger took him down to win a 3-1 decision.

At 149 pounds, Villalonga held a 2-1 lead over Mike Kelly heading into the third period. Villalonga escaped from his opening down position to win a 3-1 decision.

Top ranked Derek St. John won an 11-3 major decision over Jesse Shanaman at 157 pounds to put Iowa ahead 13-6.

At 165 pounds, No. 1 Dake took on No. 13 Nick Moore. Dake powered his way to a 4-1 lead after the first period. Dake had a 7-2 advantage in the second with another takedown and another point for Moore's second stalling call. Dake racked up takedowns in the third on his way to a 13-4 major decision.

At 174 pounds, No. 3 Michael Evans won an 11-2 major decision over Duke Pickett.

No. 4 ranked Bosak faced No. 14 Ethen Lofthouse at 184 pounds. The two wrestlers were tied at 2-2 after the second period. Bosak escaped from his choice in the third to win a 3-2 decision.

Bennett and No. 19 Nathan Burak were scoreless after the first period at 197 pounds. Bennett escaped to open the second and added a takedown with 25 seconds left in the period. Burak escaped to open the third and converted a single leg for a takedown to tie the match at 3-3. Bennett escaped and with 43 seconds left on the clock grabbed a takedown to win a 6-3 decision.

No. 6 ranked Bobby Telford sealed the win for Iowa when he won a 9-0 major decision over Jacob Aiken-Phillips.

Cornell will be off next weekend, but will compete at the EIWA Championships March 8-9.
