NEW YORK – The men's tennis team will host its first home match of the spring season on Sunday, when it battles Buffalo at noon at Reis Tennis Center. Cornell is 3-1, coming off a 5-2 victory over No. 71 St. John's last weekend.
The Big Red dropped one spot to 73rd in the nation in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings after splitting a pair of matches last weekend at the National Tennis Center in New York. Cornell suffered its first loss of the season, 5-2, to Alabama on Friday before rebounding on Sunday with a victory over St. John's by an identical score.
Sophomore
Sam Fleck is ranked 15th in the Northeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and teams with classmate
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen to comprise the No. 4 doubles team in the region. Fleck, Nguyen and fellow sophomores
Jason Luu and
Kyle Berman are all 3-1 on the season in singles play. Berman and Fleck are also a perfect 3-0 from the No. 3 doubles position.
The Big Red is a perfect 23-0 in spring matches against Buffalo (2-1), including a 7-0 sweep in Cornell's dual match opener last season on Jan. 22, 2012. The Bulls are coming off a 6-1 loss to Penn after opening the campaign with a pair of victories over Colgate and Bryant. Vusa Hove is the team's No. 1 in singles, ranking tied for 123rd in the country and 14th in the Northeast. Nguyen defeated last season, 7-5, 7-6 at the No. 3 spot.
Cornell was originally scheduled to play Fordham late Sunday afternoon, but that match has since been postponed with the hopes of rescheduling it at a later date.
