NEW YORK -- Making one last attempt to garner a bid to the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior co-captain Kate Kellner competed in the 5K on Friday night at the Columbia Qualifier at the Armory and came away with a six-second personal record of 16:01.51 in yet another terrific race.
Just five days removed from a grueling 16:07 5K/9:22 3K double at the Indoor Heptagonal Championship, Kellner ran a fantastic race on Friday, placing third in the race. The second-best time in school history, it is also the eighth-best time in Ivy League history.
With a race rabbited by New Zealand Olympian Kim Smith, the field was out quickly at 5:00 for the mile. Kellner hung in the lead pack throughout and competed very well over the final mile.
The top 16 declared athletes garner invitations to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Teammate
Rachel Sorna currently sits 10th in the event nationally and Kellner now sits 22nd. The final field will be announced on Monday after declarations.
In addition to Sorna, junior Montez Blair in the high jump and sophomore Stephen Mozia in the shot put are also ranked in the NCAA top 10heading into the weekend. Both Blair and Mozia will be in action in Boston this weekend. The Cornellians that will qualify will compete at the NCAAs in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 8-9.
Senior Nick Wade, the Heps co-MVP on the track last week, will also race at the Armory this weekend. His mile race is Saturday evening, as he continues his quest for an NCAA bid of his own.
The bulk of the Cornell men's and women's teams will be competing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Boston University on Saturday and Sunday.
