Souza's Grand Slam Powers Baseball Past Appalachian State, 8-4

BOONE, N.C. — Spenser Souza hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to power the baseball team to a come-from-behind 8-4 victory over Appalachian State on Sunday. The victory gave the Big Red a series win against a Mountaineers team that reached the an NCAA regional final last season.

Cornell (6-5) was trailing by one run entering the ninth. Leadoff hitter JD Whetsel drew a walk, which was then followed by two more walks to Tom D'Alessandro and Matt Hall. Souza, batting cleanup, followed with his first collegiate home run, to give Cornell a 7-4 lead. Ryan Plantier later scored an unearned insurance run to cap the scoring.
 
Sophomore Kellen Urbon earned the victory, working 1 1/3 innings in relief after Appalachian State took a 4-3 lead in the seventh. Freshman Matt Horton earned his first collegiate save, recording the final two outs after inheriting a pair of base runners with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Whetsel, who was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, got the game started with a double to right-center. He advanced to third on D'Alessandro's sacrifice bunt, then scored on Hall's RBI groundout.
 
The Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first, then the Big Red jumped back on top in the third. Freshman Eliot Lowell led off with a single, then came around to score on freshman Collin McGee's two-run home run – the first of his collegiate career.
 
The Big Red resumes its Spring Break trip with two games at Davidson on Tuesday and Wednesday, then concludes its road swing with three games next weekend at Villanova.
