Dake Makes History With Fourth NCAA Title

DES MOINES, Iowa - Cornell wrestling's Kyle Dake made history on Saturday night when he became the first wrestler to ever win four NCAA titles at four different weight classes. Dake defeated Penn State's David Taylor by a score of 5-4 in the finals to secure the win. Dake was named the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler. Cornell finished the tournament in fifth place. After the win, Dake was the lead story on ESPN's Sportscenter. Dake is just the third wrestler to ever win four NCAA titles.

Taylor took down Dake to open the bout less than 20 seconds in, but Dake came within a point with an escape. Dake would grab a takedown of his own late in the period to take the lead, 3-2. Dake escaped to open the second for the only point of the period. Taylor chose to start the third period down. Taylor would escape to make it 4-3, then earned a stalling call on Dake in the final seconds to tie the match at 4-4, but Dake's riding time point with a 1:13 edge secured his fourth national title.

Dake joined Dave Auble (1960) and Frank Bettucci (1953) as the lone Cornellians to win the Most Outstanding Wrestker award at the NCAA championships. He also earned the NCAA award for the most falls in Division I wrestling this season with 18. Dake wrapped up his amazing Cornell career with a 137-4 record, winning his final 79 matches dating back toMarch 6, 2011 when lost the EIWA finals at 149 pounds.
