ITHACA, N.Y. – Freshman Eliot Lowell and senior Conor McCabe had RBIs with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, but the baseball team's rally against Yale came up short on Monday in a 4-2 loss at Hoy Field. The loss broke the a four-game winning streak for Cornell (15-7), which also lost in the Ivy League for the first this season (3-1).

Yale (3-16) scraped out a run in the first inning with leadoff hitter David Toups scoring on a passed ball, then the Bulldogs added two more in the third inning. A single by Jacob Hunter, a double by Eric Hsieh and a walk by Chris Moates loaded the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly scored Hunter, then a Green Campbell to left-center allowed Hsieh to scamper home to give the visitors a 3-0 lead.

Cornell's Zach McCulley was outstanding in long relief, working 5 2/3 scoreless innings to keep the Big Red within striking distance. He yielded just four hits and one walk while striking out seven — tying the most Ks for a Big Red pitcher in a single outing this season (Brian McAfee also fanned seven on March 23 at Villanova).

Cornell finally chased Yale starter Michael Coleman in the eighth inning when. Chris Cruz doubled to right, then Ben Swinford drew a two-out walk and JD Whetsel loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitcher. David Hickey emerged from the Yale bullpen, hitting the pinch-hitting Lowell to drive in Cruz for the Big Red's first run. McCabe then followed with a hot shot up the middle that Hickey snared with his glove, only to have the ball pop out to the third base side. By the time Hickey recovered, all of the runners had safely advanced one base — including Swinford across home plate — to cut the Big Red's deficit to 3-2.

But that's as close as Cornell would come. Hickey retired the final batter of the eighth, then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save of the season. Yale pushed home an insurance run on a passed ball in the top of the ninth.

Senior Brenton Peters was 2-for-5 with the Big Red and junior Ryan Plantier hit a double in the second inning.

Monday's game was a makeup affair after rain forced the postponement of Sunday's second game of a scheduled doubleheader between Cornell and Yale. The Big Red heads back to non-league action on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against Canisius, closing out an eight-game home stand. Cornell then hits the road for a Red Rolfe Division trip to Harvard for two games on Saturday, then another twin bill on Sunday at Dartmouth in a rematch of last season's Ivy League Championship Series.
