ITHACA, N.Y. – In a crosstown battle between perennial league powers, Cornell's pitching proved to be the difference as the Big Red swept a doubleheader from Ithaca on Thursday afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field, topping the Bombers 4-0 and 9-2. Cornell improved to 19-23, while Ithaca slipped to 19-13.
Junior
Alyson Onyon was the story in a fast-paced game one, hurling a complete game eight hitter and striking out six in picking up the shutout. Onyon held the Bombers at bay before Cornell scratched together a run in the third to take the lead before the Big Red stretched it out with three insurance runs in the sixth.
The infield combo of
Emily Weinberg and
Jenny Edwards each went 2-for-3 in the opener as Cornell collected nine hits as a team. The home team used some two-out magic to get on the board, as
Clare Feely walked, advanced to second on a single by
Michiko McGivney and scored on a single by Weinberg. Run-scoring doubles by Edwards and
Kristen Towne and an RBI single by pinch hitter
Sophie Giaquinto put the game out of reach in support of Onyon's dominant outing.
Game two wasn't in doubt after the first inning when the Big Red overcame an early 1-0 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the frame. That was all
Meg Parker would need in the circle as she scattered six hits and three walks while allowing just one earned run and striking out four. She also was 2-for-3 with two runs scored at the plate. The big hitter of the game was
Leanne Iannucci, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, four RBI and two runs scored in the win.
Lauren Bucolo also had a pair of hits and
Kristan Baker had her first hit for the Big Red along with her first RBI.
Sophie Giaquinto had a two-run single, making her 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI on the day.
Sammy Roth pitched a scoreless seventh to help the Big Red complete the sweep.
Cornell returns to action when it faces Ivy League South Division rival Princeton for a four-game set beginning on Saturday, April 27 at 12:30 p.m. at Niemand*Robison Field.
