Harshberger, Harrod Push Cornell To 15-5 Victory Over Morgan State

TOWSON, MD - The Cornell softball team defeated the Morgan State Bears 15-5 in five innings on Saturday morning at Tiger Softball Stadium. The Big Red improved to 4-4, while the Bears dropped to 0-8.

Emma Harshberger powered the Big Red forward with four RBI, along with Ella Harrod who produced three hits and three RBI. Susanna Pate had a strong outing on the bases, managing four runs. Laney Freiband handled business on the mound, picking up her first victory of the season.

Cornell opened the scoring in the first inning when Lauren Holt singled up the middle to bring Tarisa Frans home for a 1-0 lead. The Big Red erupted for four runs in the second inning, highlighted by an RBI walk from Harshberger, an RBI walk from Holt, and a run-scoring single from Harrod before Harshberger crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it 5-0. Cornell continued its offensive surge in the third inning as Harshberger delivered a two-RBI double, Harrod added a two-RBI triple, and Maddie Ullensvang doubled home another run to extend the advantage to 10-0.

Morgan State got on the board in the bottom of the third, but Cornell responded again in the fourth inning. Charlize Cai doubled to left field to score Susanna Pate, and Harshberger lifted a sacrifice fly to bring Cai home to push the lead to 12-1. The Bears plated three runs in the bottom half of the fourth, trimming the deficit to 12-4 heading into the fifth inning.

The Big Red put the game out of reach in the fifth inning when Pate launched a three-run home run to left field, scoring Avery Wolfe and Ullensvang to make it 15-4. Morgan State added one run in the bottom of the inning, but Cornell secured the 15-5 victory to move to 4-4 on the season. Freiband earned the win in the circle, tossing five innings while allowing five runs on eight hits.

Next Up
The Cornell softball team will return to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader against Merrimack to close out the DeMarini Tiger Clash. The first game is set for 10:00 a.m., followed by the finale at 12:30 p.m. at Tiger Softball Stadium.
