2013-14 Women's Basketball Schedule
ITHACA, N.Y. –
Dayna Smith, The Rebecca Quinn Morgan '60 Head Coach of Women's Basketball, has announced the schedule for the upcoming 2013-14 season. The slate features 14 home games, as well as a trip out west to participate in the Seattle Tournament.
The 2013-14 campaign opens on Nov. 8 when regional rival Colgate comes to Newman Arena. A week later, the Big Red travels to in-state rivals Buffalo on Nov. 16 and Syracuse on Nov. 18.
Cornell holds a slim, 18-15 lead in the all-time series with the Raiders, having won six of the last seven contests against the Patriot League foe. Buffalo owns a 9-5 record in the series, but the Big Red defeated the Bulls last season, 70-43, while Syracuse is riding a four-game winning streak for a 14-4 record against the Big Red.
Back-to-back home games against Bucknell (Nov. 23) and Loyola (Nov. 26) are next on tap, before heading to rising-senior
Shelby Lyman's home state to participate in the Seattle Tournament from Nov. 29-30. Cornell will face Drake to open the tournament, before taking on either Coastal Carolina or Seattle the following day. The Big Red fell to the Bison last season to slip to 17-5 in the all-time series, while the Greyhounds are a perfect 2-0 against Cornell, but the two teams have not met since 1991.
The Big Red will play host to Binghamton on Dec. 4 and St. Francis (N.Y.) on Dec. 7, before enjoying its annual hiatus for the school's study break. Last season, Cornell ended a four-game skid against the Bearcats to cut into Binghamton's lead in the all-time series (7-5), while winning its fifth consecutive game against the Terriers to improve to 6-1 all-time.
Cornell returns to action on Dec. 21 when it travels to Robert Morris to take on the Colonials for the first time since 1999. The Big Red is a perfect 2-0 against RMU.
The team closes 2013 and opens 2014 with a pair of home games, taking on Drexel on Dec. 30 and Vermont on Jan. 2. Cornell is a perfect 4-0 against the Dragons, while the Wildcats hold a 6-3 lead in the all-time series.
The Big Red will then head south to take on Morgan State on Jan. 6 and Howard University on Jan. 8. Cornell edged the Bears last season, 77-73, to take the slim 2-1 lead in the series, but has never faced the Bison in women's basketball.
Ivy League play begins on Jan. 18 with a trip to Columbia, before the Lions make the return trip to Newman Arena the following weekend. The Big Red swept Columbia last year to run its winning streak to five games and improve to 41-23 in the all-time series.
A five-game Ivy League home stand continues when Brown (Jan. 31), Yale (Feb. 1), Penn (Feb. 7) and Princeton (Feb. 8) travel to Ithaca. The Bears dominated the Big Red early on, with Cornell winning only three times prior to the 1994-95 season. Since that year, the series has been far more competitive with Brown holding a slight 20-18 lead, as compared to its 47-21 advantage all-time in the series. The two teams split last season, when for the second year in a row Cornell defeated the Bears at Newman Arena on a last second shot.
The Bulldogs have won the last eight meetings to improve its lead in the all-time series history to 46-22, but since 2000, the series is tied, 13-13.
The Quakers also hold a commanding all-time series record, 50-19, but the Big Red has won 10 of the last 16 meetings. The reigning Ivy League champion Tigers have a 46-20 advantage in the all-time series, but it has been much more competitive of late, with Princeton leading 16-10 since the 2000-01 season.
Cornell's first full Ivy League road weekend will also wrap up the first half of conference play, as the Big Red heads to Dartmouth (Feb. 14) and Harvard (Feb. 15). The Crimson has controlled the series, leading the Big Red 59-11, including a perfect 33-0 in contests played in Cambridge, and Dartmouth has historically been just as successful, with a 53-15 record against the Big Red. However, since Cornell snapped an 11-game Big Green winning streak during the 2007-08 season, Cornell has taken an 8-6 lead in the series, with five of those games being decided by four or fewer points.
Cornell remains on the road with a trip to Yale (Feb. 21) and Brown (Feb. 22), before returning home to take on Harvard (Feb. 28) and Dartmouth (March 1).
The regular season will conclude with a road trip to Princeton (March 7) and Penn (March 8).
