THE WEEKEND: The Big Red field hockey team will seek its first win of the 2013 season when it welcomes St. Francis (Pa.) and Georgetown to Marsha Dodson Field this weekend. Cornell will face the Red Flash on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m., before taking on the Hoyas on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 12 p.m.

THE SERIES WITH ST. FRANCIS (Pa.): Cornell has met the Red Flash just three times on the field hockey pitch, with the Big Red earning a pair of commanding victories in 2005 (9-1) and 2010 (4-1), before winning 2-0 during the 2011 season. The nine goals and 25 points registered by Cornell during the 2005 meeting set single-game records for the program.

SCOUTING THE RED FLASH: St. Francis (Pa.) is off to a 1-0 start on the season, thanks to a 6-3 victory over Lehigh last weekend. Autumn Pellman registered five goals for the Red Flash, with Selena Adamshick adding one goal and one assist. In goal, Jill DiCola made four saves and allowed three goals in 70 minutes of action.

LAST TIME VS. ST. FRANCIS (Pa.): The Big Red snapped a three-game skid by beating St. Francis (Pa.), 2-0, on Marsha Dodson Field on Sept. 18, 2011. Goalie Alex Botte '11 was outstanding in-between the pipes, notching eight saves to pick up her first win of the season. With the clean sheet, she moved into 10th place in Cornell history for career shutout victories. On the other end of the field, Hannah Balleza registered both goals for the Big Red, which had limited opportunities thanks to a staunch St. Francis' defense that allowed just three shots on goal. Although she was not credited with an assist, the Big Red's first goal was set up by an outstanding play from Katie Laventure '13. Cornell struck again just before the intermission when Kat DiPastina '13 worked the ball down the left sideline and then ripped a shot towards goal that was redirected into the net by Balleza. Both teams had solid opportunities in the second half but neither managed to score again as the Big Red took the 2-0 victory. The Red Flash held the significant edge in shots (13-5), shots on goal (8-3) and penalty corners (8-2), but got just one save from Jill DiCola.

VS. THE ATLANTIC 10: Cornell is 7-6 all-time vs. the current members of the Atlantic 10 with six victories coming against the conference's two newest members – Lock Haven (3-4) and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). The Big Red has a winning record against Saint Joseph's (1-0), but a losing mark against Massachusetts (0-1) and Richmond (0-1), and has never faced La Salle, Saint Louis or Virginia Commonwealth … Coach Hornibrook is 7-4 all-time against the A10.

THE SERIES WITH GEORGETOWN: Cornell holds a 6-0 lead in the series with the Hoyas. The teams first met in the 2003 season when the Big Red escaped with the 2-1 victory. Since then, Cornell has dominated Georgetown, outscoring the Hoyas 19-4 in the past five meetings.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS: Georgetown got off to an 0-4 start prior to its meeting with Lehigh on Friday evening. Sarah Butterfield has scored two of the Hoya's three goals this season, with Maria McDonald registering the third. Aliyah Graves and Molly Denzel have tallied one assist apiece. In goal, freshman Rosalie Nolen has played all but 17 minutes and has allowed 15 goals while making 29 saves for a 5.13 goals-against average and a .659 save percentage.

LAST TIME VS. GEORGETOWN: The Big Red field used some balanced offense and solid defense to defeat Georgetown, 3-1, on Oct. 7, 2012 at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey Complex in University Park, Md. Three Big Red players found the back of the net, with Marisa Siergiej registering one goal and one assist. Brittany Thompson and Hannah Balleza each scored once and Taylor Standiford tallied one helper. In goal, Carolyn Horner made four saves. Georgetown held the edge in shots, 11-8, while the Big Red had a slim 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. For the second consecutive game, Cornell's penalty corner unit proved to be the difference, scoring twice on its six chances. After Thompson got the visitors on the board just 28 seconds into the game with a breakaway goal, Cornell found itself in a 1-1 contest after Annie Wilson knotted the game by scoring off a rebound in the 15th minute. Balleza put the Big Red up, 2-1, just before the half, scoring off a penalty corner with the assist being credited to Siergiej. Siergiej then tacked on a late insurance goal in the waning moments of the contest to account for the 3-1 final.

VS. THE BIG EAST: Cornell is 11-11 all-time against the current members of the Big East, due mostly to the Big Red's 6-0 record vs. Georgetown. Cornell has played to an even record vs. Villanova (2-2), while holding losing records against Connecticut (0-2), Providence (0-1), Rutgers (3-4) and Temple. The Big Red has never played Cincinnati, Louisville or Old Dominion in field hockey … Coach Hornibrook is 8-8 vs. the Big East.

THE HEAD COACH: Cornell head coach Donna Hornibrook is in her 10th season at Cornell (76-72, .514) ... Hornibrook became the sixth coach in Cornell field hockey history in January 2004 ... She has a 246-119-10 (.669) record as a head coach, including a 111-39-4 mark at Houghton and a 60-8-6 record at New Brunswick.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN:  Carolyn Horner and Hannah Balleza have been named captains for the 2013 season.

ALL-IVY ACCOLADES: Cornell had five players named All-Ivy in 2012, four of whom are back for the 2013 season – seniors Hannah Balleza (first-team) and Carolyn Horner (first-team), junior Ann DiPastina (honorable mention) and sophomore Marisa Siergiej (second-team).

SMARTY PANTS: The Big Red placed five student-athletes on the 2012 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad. Cornell has had at least four players earn the honor in sight of the past nine seasons. Additionally, the 2012 squad earned the NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Team Award for the fifth time during head coach Donna Hornibrook's tenure.

She needs just nine more points to move into a tie with Emily Robb (1995-98), who sits in fourth place overall with 84 points.

HORNER SHUTOUTS: Carolyn Horner ranks fourth overall in Big Red history with six career shutouts, along with Kaitlin Tierney (2000-03). She needs just one more shutout to move into a tie for third place with Kelly Clark (1985-87).

WINNING!!: With her 10 career wins, Carolyn Horner ranks 13th in Cornell history. She needs just one more to move into 12th place overall with Kelly Clark (1985-87).

The defense has been equally solid in the circle, allowing just 235 penalty corners (5.9 per game).

FAST STARTS: Scoring first has been a big part of the Big Red's success in recent years. Since Coach Hornibrook has taken over the program, Cornell has posted an impressive 68-13 record in games in which they have scored first. Conversely, the team has won only eight games in which they have had to come back from an early deficit to win. The first was Coach Hornibrook's very first victory with the team, a 6-3 win over Lehigh in 2004, with the latest coming on Sept. 4, 2011 as Cornell defeated Lock Haven, 3-2, in Ithaca, N.Y.

KNOCK THREE TIMES: When the Big Red fell to Brown last season, 4-3, in double overtime, it marked only the third time in Coach Hornibrook's career with Cornell that the team scored three goals and lost the contest. Under Coach Hornibrook, the Big Red improved to 47-3 in games in which it scores at least three goals when it defeated Holy Cross (4-0) on Oct. 28, 2012.

CLOSE CALLS: Cornell's 3-2 loss in overtime to Lock Haven in the 2013 season opemer continued the Big Red's trend of playing in one-goal games. Since the start of the 2006 season, the Big Red has lost 50 games, with 30 of those coming by a single goal, including 14 in overtime. During that same span, Cornell has won 63 games, with 31 coming in one-goal games, including nine in overtime.

SISTER ACT: Since the beginning of the 2007 campaign, Cornell has had at least one set of sisters on its roster each season. This year, the team features one set of sisters – twins Keelin and Mallory Bannon.

TWINS AND MORE TWINS!: While fans of the Big Red know that seniors Keelin and Mallory Bannon are twins, many might not know that another member of the team has a twin, who also plays a collegiate sport. Senior Carolyn Horner's twin, Gabby, plays lacrosse at Tufts.
