Highlights
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sophomore forward
Christian Hilbrich scored with four seconds left in the first period, then set up senior forward
Dustin Mowrey's winner with 20 seconds remaining in the second period to propel the men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over rival Harvard on Friday night at Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
Senior goaltender
Andy Iles made 22 saves to earn his 50th career victory.
Junior
Joakim Ryan -- who ranks second in the country in points per game among blueliners -- set up a pair of goals in the first period to stake visiting Cornell (9-4-3, 5-3-2 ECAC Hockey) to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. The first came 6:22 into the game via the Big Red's first shorthanded goal of the season. Ryan caught Harvard (5-9-3, 2-7-3 ECAC Hockey) making a defensive line change and sprung
Madison Dias loose on a breakaway down the right side of the slot. The junior forward lifted a shot over the blocker of Crimson goalie Steve Michalek for his first goal of the season.
Hilbrich doubled the visitors' lead just moments before the intermission on a dazzling individual effort. The 6-foot-6 forward eluded a defender in the neutral zone to set up a two-on-one with junior linemate
Brian Ferlin. Hilbrich cut into the faceoff circle and deftly beat the defender before scooping a backhand by Michalek's catching glove.
But the Crimson didn't go away quietly. Sean Malone scored midway through the second to cut the hosts' deficit in half, drawing a penalty in the process. The Big Red killed off the ensuing power play and when on the man advantage itself a few minutes later only to see Harvard knot the game at 2. Malone won a battle along the end boards behind Iles and set up a wide-open Devin Tringale for a shorthanded goal with 4:40 left in the frame.
Cornell pulled ahead for good with another late-period strike. Ferlin's pass to Hilbrich behind the Harvard net was quickly dished up to Mowrey in the lower left circle. He lifted a shot to the top corner of the net over Michalek's glove to restore Cornell's lead.
Iles made sure that one-goal edge stood up by stopping all 11 shots he faced in the third period. The Big Red was a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill, including a pair of kills in the latter half of the third.
Cornell now has just one loss in its last 10 games (7-1-2) heading into Saturday night's game at Dartmouth.
