ITHACA, N.Y. —Senior forward
Dustin Mowrey had a goal and three assists Friday and linemate
Christian Hilbrich added a pair of goals in the men's hockey team's 4-4 tie with St. Lawrence in front of a sold-out crowd at Lynah Rink. Cornell (9-4-5, 5-3-4 ECAC Hockey) never trailed in its third straight game and extended its unbeaten streak to six games.
Â
The Big Red went on to outshoot the Saints in overtime, 9-1, including a failed penalty shot attempt with 32.2 seconds remaining.
Andy Iles then made a huge save on Matt Carey with 16 seconds to play in the extra frame, preserving a point for Cornell.
Â
The Big Red came out roaring in its first home action in nearly seven weeks, building a 2-0 lead in the first 4 minutes, 14 seconds of the game. After
Jacob MacDonald's blast from the left point was stopped by Saints goalie Matt Weninger, Mowrey picked up the puck in the right corner eluded his defender while cutting toward the middle. After sending a backhander on net, which was stopped, Mowrey calmly picked up the rebound and maneuvered his way around the sprawled goalie to give the home side a lead just 1:36 in.
Â
Mowrey's magic would continue just a few shifts later as he set up Hilbrich's first goal. After stripping a St. Lawrence defenseman rushing up the left wing, Mowrey made a nice move off of his skate to rid a defender in the slot. His attempt to beat Weninger with a shot between the legs was stopped, but Hilbrich swooped in for a tap-in and a two-goal Big Red lead.
Â
Cornell went on to post the first 11 shots on goal in the game. But unlike the last time the teams met – when the Big Red blitzed the Saints for four goals in the first period – Cornell couldn't build on its fast start Friday. St. Lawrence (8-12-3, 2-6-3 ECAC Hockey) gained momentum by killing off the Big Red's first power play of the game, then tied the game with a pair of goals in a 24-second span. Brian Ward finished off a three-on-two rush, then Alex Dahl picked a corner while wheeling through the slot, suddenly tying the score at 2.
Â
Hilbrich then gave the Big Red a 3-2 lead after the first period with his seventh goal of the season with five seconds left in the opening frame. He picked up a pass from
Brian Ferlin on the doorstep, then waited out Weninger and flipped it over the goaltender's sprawled-out body. It's Hilbrich's first career two-goal game.
Â
St. Lawrence's nation-leading power play proved to be its savior the rest of the way, erasing a pair of one-goal Big Red leads. Jeremy Wick scored his team-leading 10
th goal on the man advantage on a deflection early in the second period to tie the game at 3.
Â
Cornell would have an answer late in the second when the Ferlin-Mowrey-Hilbrich line teamed up for yet another goal. After the hard work of Mowrey and Hilbrich got the puck to Ferlin, he outmuscled a defender and worked his way to the front of the cage, where he ripped one past Weninger's glove to give the Big Red the lead at the end of two. All three players ended up with a plus-4 rating on the night.
Â
The Saints later took advantage of their fourth power play of the game late in the third period. The Big Red blocked three consecutive shots by Greg Carey, but the last carom went directly to brother Matt Carey for an easy conversion to knot the game at 4. It marks the first time this season the Big Red has yielded more than three goals in a game – the last team in the nation to do so.
Â
Overtime followed, where Cornell dominated to the tune of a 9-1 advantage in shots on goal. Undoubtedly the best chance of the extra session came when a
Joakim Ryan clear came to
Cole Bardreau, who went all alone on a breakaway. He was hauled down from behind, resulting in a penalty shot opportunity with just 32.2 seconds left. Bardreau came in from the left side and tried to fire a shot past the glove of Weninger, but the senior goaltender made the save. It was the Big Red's first penalty shot since Locke Jillson's bid in an NCAA game in 2012, and extended the program's penalty-shot futility to 862 consecutive games. The last Cornell player to score a goal on a penalty shot was Joe Nieuwendyk on Feb. 27, 1987.
Â
Mowrey's four-point effort was the Big Red's first since Tyler Roeszler had a hat trick to go with an assist Jan. 22, 2011 against Colgate. Cornell remains undefeated when scoring first (7-0-3), leading after the first period (6-0-3) and leading after the second period (8-0-1).
Â
Cornell returns to action at 7 p.m. Saturday against #13/13 Clarkson at Lynah Rink.
