1/6/2014 9:57:00 PM

Box Score BALTIMORE – The Big Red women's basketball team jumped out to an 11-point lead at the half and then held off a late surge to defeat Morgan State, 59-42, this evening at Hill Field House in Baltimore, Md. Cornell used a well balanced offense with three players in double-figures, and assisted on 21-of-26 baskets, while holding the Bears to just 30 percent shooting (15-50) to earn its second consecutive win.

Allyson DiMagno led the Big Red with 16 points on 8-of-13 shooting and had a team-high nine rebounds, while Shelby Lyman and Nia Marshall added 10 points apiece. Marshall and Lyman finished with eight and seven rebounds, respectively, helping Cornell to a significant 45-30 edge in rebounds, limiting the home team to just six offensive boards and a mere four second-chance points. Stephanie Long also pulled down seven rebounds and handed out a game-high seven assists. The Cornell bench also outscored the Bears bench, 15-2, thanks in large part to a season-high six points form Sarah Poland.

Both teams turned the ball over 17 times and posted nine steals each.

Morgan State (2-11) was led by Tracey Carrington's 21 points, while Ivy Harrington finished with 12, but Cornell limited the duo to just 11-of-32 shooting from the floor and forced them into a combined nine turnovers.

Cornell shot 42.6 percent (26-61) for the game and connected on 33.3 percent of 3-pointers (5-15), while holding the Bears to just 30 percent overall and 22.2 percent (2-9) from beyond the arc.

Neither team could muster much offense in the opening moment of the game but with the score tied at 8-8 with just under eight minutes gone, the Big Red started to take over, beginning with a traditional three-point play from Marshall. That opened a 12-2 run that gave the visitors a double-digit lead (20-10) with 9:06 remaining in the half.

The Big Red eventually extended its lead to 14 points on a jumper by DiMagno at the 6:35 mark before taking an 11-point lead into the break.

Morgan State got back-to-back buckets to open the second half and make it a seven-point contest (31-24) at the 18:20 mark. Cornell answered with consecutive layups from DiMagno and Marshall but for the next six minutes, the home team continued to battle, making it an eight-point contest twice more before Cornell used a 14-3 run to put the game out of reach (53-34) with just over five minutes to play.

Cornell is back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 8 when it take on Howard at 7 p.m.
