Time Warner SportsSCOUTING CORNELL Big Red HeadlinesCornell men's soccer fell to 0-2-0 in conference play on Saturday, dropping its Ivy League road opener to Harvard 1-0. The Big Red defense was stout yet again, holding the Crimson to just one goal in the defeat. Harvard had been averaging over two goals per game and had attempted over 20 shots per game during its sizeable win streak. The Big Red limited the Crimson to just 13 shot attempts, but conceded the lone goal during a net mouth scrum in the 48
th minute. While Cornell pressed for the equalizer, it could not find a way to solve the stingy Crimson defense.
About Head Coach Jaro ZawislanZawislan enters his sixth season at Cornell having established himself as one of the top coaches in the Ivy League during his short tenure. After taking over a program that was 1-15 the season before his appointment as head coach, Zawislan has transformed Big Red men's soccer into a consistent winner and a national presence in NCAA Division I. In his first five seasons on East Hill his teams have posted at least .500 winning percentages four times, while he has led Cornell to three consecutive winning seasons. He also directed the Big Red to its first Ivy League title since 1995 and first outright title since 1977 in 2012. His coaching record currently sits at 47-27-10 and his current .619 winning percentage is the second best mark in program history.
Zawislan is a graduate of Clemson University '93, while he was a four-year starting goalkeeper on the varsity soccer team. Upon his graduation he played professionally both in the United States and his native Poland, before pursuing a career in coaching. He made assistant coaching stops at Stanford, Creighton and Syracuse, before being named Cornell's 11
th head coach in 2009.
Last Meeting: ColgateCornell and Colgate battled to a scoreless draw in last season's matchup at Berman Field. Both squads struggled to find offense with only nine total shots finding their way on net. The Big Red generated most of its chances during the overtime session, with
Ralph Lee Price IV nearly netting the golden goal. The back sent a cross into the box which took a deflection and trickled across the goal mouth, but no Big Red player could get a finishing boot to the ball allowing net minder Liam Stapleton to recover the loose ball. Cornell outshot Colgate 15-12, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
Evan King got the nod in net for the Big Red, making four saves to post a clean sheet in his first ever collegiate start.
Recent Series: ColgateCornell has owned Colgate since head coach
Jaro Zawislan took the helm of the team in 2009. Cornell holds a 4-0-1 record against the Raiders during the Zawislan era; however, the Big Red's winning streak was snapped in the 0-0 tie last season. The Big Red has outscored the Raiders 9-2 in the contests, including 2-0 and 3-1 victories at Beyer-Small '76 Field.
Dynamic DefenseThe Big Red defense was stout yet again on Saturday, holding the top offensive squad in the conference to just one goal and four shots on goal. Impressive, has been the team's ability to insulate the net with aggressive defensive pressure. Cornell held Harvard to just 13 shot attempts in the contest – the Crimson was averaging over 20 shots per game during the team's six-game winning streak entering the game. The Big Red currently ranks tenth in NCAA Division I with a 0.52 team goals against average and ranks tied for seventh in shutout percentage, marking a clean sheet in 64% of its contests this season.
Parsimonious Paws in NetSenior keeper
Zach Zagorski has been stellar in net for the Big Red this season. He was the tough luck loser on Saturday despite another solid performance. He made three saves in the contest with the lone Harvard marker coming off a rebound that pin-balled around the box, before falling to the foot of Hiroki Kobayashi at point blank range. Zagorski currently leads the Ivy League for all eligible keepers in goals against average (0.545) and save percentage (.857). He currently ranks in the top-15 in NCAA Division I in two categories; checking in at 12
th in goals against average and 13
th in save percentage. His 36 saves are fourth most in the Ivy League. Zagorski now has 11 career shutouts and is all-alone in fourth on the program's all-time list for the statistic.
On the Road AgainThe Big Red will be on the road again on Tuesday evening. Cornell has played several big road games this season, including contests at ranked opponents Syracuse and Louisville, and will not be fazed by the hostile Colgate crowd. Cornell has found trouble scoring on the road this season, mustering only one-goal in road games so far this season. The Big Red will look to secure a victory on the road for the first time since a 1-0 victory over Binghamton on Sept. 13.
Non-Conference No ProblemThe Big Red has thrived in non-conference play this season. The team has a 6-2-1 record in non-conference games this season. Despite the strong record, the team has struggled to find rhythm on the offensive end on the road. The Big Red will look to ramp up the attack in hopes of igniting the offense heading into the meat of the Ivy League schedule.
Captains Are Clutch With a young, though talented supporting cast, Cornell knew it would need big contributions from the team's four senior captains.
Peter Chodas,
Conor Goepel,
Devin Morgan and
Zach Zagorski have answered the call in resounding fashion this season. Each player finds his name amongst the Ivy League's best in varied categories.
Go for GoalThe Big Red has sputtered to a 0-2-0 start to league play. While the defense has remained strong, the team has struggled find consistency in the attacking third. The team has been able to generate strong possession numbers in the offensive end, but has been able to translate that zone time into quality chances at net. Cornell will look to get more balls on net in an effort to break a scoring drought that has carried for 215-minutes of game action dating back to the Big Red's 5-0 trouncing of Buffalo.
SCOUTING COLGATE Raider HeadlinesSimilarly to Cornell, Colgate has also struggled out of the gate during league play. The Raiders have a 1-3-0 record in Patriot League play and have lost three straight following a 2-1 double-overtime victory in the league play opener at Lafayette. Colgate had a rough past week, dropping two straight results at home against the service academies. Most recently, the Raiders fell 2-0 to Navy on Saturday as the team was shutout for the second time in three contests. The team launched ten shots in the contest, but only was able to direct four on net in the loss.
About Head Coach Erik RonningRonning is in his tenth season at the helm of the Colgate men's soccer program. He has transformed the Raiders into a consistent presence at the top of the Patriot League standings and has put the program on the national stage during his tenure in Hamilton, N.Y. He has led Colgate to three Patriot League Championship titles – including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008 – with the most recent title coming in 2011. The 2007 championship earned the Raiders their first NCAA Tournament berth in 41 years. He currently sports a 79-70-37 career record with the program. Ronning made a coaching stop at Northwestern and served in the Olympic Development Program for the United States Youth Soccer Association prior to returning to his alma mater. He was a four year starter for the Raiders during his collegiate career, earning First Team All-Patriot League honors after his senior season.
Contain KutlerSophomore attacking mid Ethan Kutler is the engine that drives the Colgate offense. He is one of the premier offensive presences in all of NCAA Division I. He currently leads the conference and ranks fourth in the country in points (22) and third in goals (10). The dynamic attacker has scored the game-winning goal in three of the team's four victories this season. The Big Red must be cognizant of Kutler wherever he is on the pitch as the sophomore can break a game open with his technical ability at any moment.
CU Inaria ChampsThis season marked the fourth consecutive year Cornell and Colgate combined to dual-host the CU Inaria Classic. The Big Red had dominated the early-season event, winning the title in the first three iterations of the classic. This season crowned a new champ this season as Colgate edged the Big Red for the title this season. While both squads went 2-0 against visiting squads Fairleigh Dickinson and Siena, Colgate scored six goals and posted a +4 goal differential compared to Cornell's three goals and +3 goal differential. The Big Red will look to get revenge on Colgate by beating them head-to-head on Tuesday.
Home is Where the Wins AreWhile Colgate has struggled on the road this season, the team plays strong at home. Three of the team's four victories have come at Beyer-Small '76 Field this season, while the team has gone 3-1-0 in non-conference home games. While the Raiders have defended their home field well, Cornell has experienced recent success at Colgate, taking home victories in its last two trips to Hamilton, N.Y.
UP NEXTThe Big Red will return to Berman Field Saturday to welcome Yale for homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
