10/25/2014 9:52:00 AM

In their second match in Regional play, the Big Red defeated Skidmore College, 21-17 . The Thoroughbreds of Skidmore have played together for a couple of years and present a problem if you stumble.  The Red started seniors Nick Stieg, Hakan Karabey with sophomore Ignacio Masias.  Masias carried the Red with four goals to a 5 -4 first chukker advantage.  After trading goals at the beginning of the second, the Thoroughbreds scored the next six goals to take the chukker 7 - 1 and lead 11 - 6 at the half.  Cornell had several chances to defend during the run but simply could not put the mallet on the ball.  Stieg and Karabey were replaced by senior Alex Langlois and freshman Kamran Pirasteh for the third.  The Red jumped out for three quick goals to pull within two. The two teams traded a couple of goals and then the Red rattled off five unanswered goals to re-take the lead going into the fourth, 15 - 13.  The Thoroughbreds hung tough in the fourth but Cornell increased its lead to 19 - 14 before finally bringing home the win with a 21 - 17 final.  Pirasteh tallied nine goals in his two chukkers, with Masias adding eight, Langlois having two and Stieg and Karabey each scored once.  The game showed the depth of the Red this season.
