Sophomore net minder
Paula Voorheis (L, 0-2-0) again got the start in the crease for the Big Red. As was the case yesterday, she found herself under siege in the second and third periods facing 25 shots in final 40 minutes. She finished with 26 saves in the loss.
Coming into the game, No. 5 Cornell (0-2-0) hoped to salvage a split in its extremely difficult two-game road series at No. 3 Boston College (5-0-1). The Eagles had other ideas, again jumping out to a quick lead, before pulling away in decisive second and third periods.
BC jumped on the Big Red early, as Kenzie Kent got the Eagles on the board just 4:36 into the contest. The Eagles would add to their lead on the man-advantage just over the halfway point of the period. Andie Anastos fired home the power-play marker to double the lead to 2-0.
Cornell pushed back right before the horn to end the opening 20 minutes. Doering started the scoring sequence, moving the puck to Jenner. The center made a quick pass over to Fulton, who buried a shot past Katie Burt (W, 5-0-1) for her second goal in as many games to start the season. The goal came with just 11 ticks left on the clock, pulling Cornell back into the game.
The late goal provided the Big Red a major momentum boost as the team came out strong to begin the middle period. The Eagles weathered the early storm, before establishing offensive zone time of their own. BC capitalized with 9:08 left in the period on a goal from Kate Leary to reestablish the two-goal advantage.
The goal took the wind out of the Big Red's sails as BC posted its second three-goal third period in as many days. Haley Skarupa, Alex Carpenter (PP) and Kate Leary added her second of the game to widen the margin to 6-1.
Hanna Bunton pulled the Big Red one-goal closer with 4:25 left. With BC working on a power-play, Bunton stole a pass and went in on a breakaway, beating Burt for the shorthanded tally.
The deficit proved too great to overcome, as Cornell dropped its second consecutive game to begin the season. It is the first time Cornell has lost two to start a season since 2009-10 when the Big Red dropped two 4-1 decisions against Mercyhurst.
Cornell will return to action on Friday, Oct. 31, when it welcomes Princeton to Lynah Rink for the team's home opener.
