ITHACA, N.Y. – Senior forward
Kerry Schubert scored her fourth goal of the season, but the women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Princeton on Saturday at Berman Field. Cornell slipped to 7-9 (1-5 Ivy), while the Tigers improved to 6-5-3 (3-2-1 Ivy).
Princeton goalkeeper Darcy Hargadon was the difference in a match that saw Cornell outshoot Princeton 14-6, including 6-2 on goal.
The game started with fireworks, as each team netted a goal in the first 17 minutes. The Tigers got on the board in the 10th minute when Lauren Lazo headed in a cross from Jesse McDonough after a run through the left side of the box. Cornell quickly answered when Schubert put away a rebound after freshman forward
Meera Dheer's initial shot was saved in the 17th minute.
Cornell controlled play for the first half of play, holding a 5-1 shot advantage – though Princeton also had four dangerous corner kicks. Princeton scored the go-ahead goal for the second time when Tyler Lussi scored in the 56th minute thanks to a beautiful feed from Lazo. Lussi entered the day ranked No. 2 in the nation in points per game, and No. 3 in the nation in goals per game.
Senior midfielder Claire McManus had a dangerous chance in the 62nd minute for Cornell, but it was saved by Hargadon. The Big Red closes out the 2014 campaign when it hosts Dartmouth at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at Berman Field. The game will be part of Senior Day festivities, where the Big Red will honor Schubert, MacManus and defenders
Sydney Cetrullo and
