Men's Polo Splits Weekend Set With Virginia, Skidmore

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's polo team split a weekend road set with a 10-9 shootout loss to Virginia and a 19-14 victory at Skidmore. The Big Red ended the weekend with a 3-1 overall record.

On Friday evening at Virginia, Ignacio Masias, Nick Stieg and Kamran Pirasteh started for the Big Red. After falling behind 2-0, the men came back to tie it at 3-3 after one chukker. Cornell came out strong in the second and ended up taking a 7-5 lead into the half. Stieg and Pirasteh gave way in the second half to Hakan Karabey and Alex Langlois. In a defensive chukker, the teams traded goals to see the Big Red head into the fourth up 8-6. The Cavaliers came back strong and tied the match on a No. 4 penalty shot with 15 seconds left at 9-9 to send the game to a shootout. The Cavaliers bested Cornell there to take the match 10-9, giving the men its  first loss. Masias tallied 4 goals, Stieg had two, Pirasteh notched one and there was one penalty goal and one pony goal.

On Sunday afternoon, the Big Red traveled to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore College.Cornell's team of Kamran Pirasteh, Hakan Karabey and Nick Stieg started slowly and found themselves behind 6-2 after the first. The team quickly turned things around in the second by scoring the first two goals to pull within 6-4. Skidmore pulled it back out to a four-goal lead before Cornell scored five of the next six goals to tie it at 9-9 going into the half. Cornell continued its surge and pulled ahead for good in the third, ending it ahead 15-10 before trading goals in the fourth to make it a  19-14 win. Pirasteh tallied 10 goals to lead the Big Red with Stieg adding eight and Karabey one.
