HAMDEN, Conn. – Sophomore goaltender
Mitch Gillam made a career-high 39 saves, but the Cornell men's hockey team surrendered a controversial late goal in a 1-0 loss Saturday at Quinnipiac.
Â
The Bobcats' Tim Clifton scored the winner with 1 minute, 56 seconds left after a goal-mouth scramble. Soren Jonzzon was credited with the primary assist on the tally, but the Big Red was more concerned with his presence in the crease on the play. No video replay was granted, and the Bobcats handed the Big Red its third consecutive loss.
Â
Cornell (0-3-1, 0-2 ECAC Hockey) had its fair of chances despite only having 18 shots on goal – including one in the third period. The Big Red was 0-for-4 on the power play, including 1:36 of a two-man advantage in the first period and most of a major power play in the second period. Cornell has one goal in 19 power-play chances through four games.
Â
Quinnipiac (5-2-1, 2-0) was given the first power play of the game, but Cornell actually ended up with the best scoring opportunity over the ensuing two minutes. Senior forward
Cole Bardreau sprinted away on a two-on-one into the right circle. His attempted pass across the low slot was blocked, but Bardreau was able to regain control only to whip a shot just wide of the near post on a sharp angle 3:31 into the game.
Â
After the Big Red's two-man advantage expired, a scramble to get the proper personnel on the ice yielded a Tommy Schutt breakaway. Gillam was equal to the challenge, though, flashing out his left pad to make the save.
Â
Cornell got another crack at a particular advantageous power play early in the second period when it had nearly four minutes of a major power play. The Big Red's best chances came late in the opportunity, with freshman defenseman
Ryan Bliss' shot from the left circle gloved and sophomore forward
Jake Weidner's backhand, set up by Bliss, kicked away nine seconds later.
Â
Quinnipiac then got its own power play in the final minutes of the frame, with the biggest save coming from senior forward
Joel Lowry. A rebound popped out to the weak side where Bobcats forward Travis St. Denis had a shot at a cage with Gillam scrambling, but Lowry went down to his knees and absorbed the shot in his midsection to keep the game scoreless into the third period.
Â
The Bobcats then held a 19-1 edge in shots on goal in the third period. Gillam gloved Landon Smith's shot just 12 seconds into the frame after a turnover at the Cornell blue line. Jonzzon's shot from the left circle on a three-on-two was kicked aside by Gillam's right pad at the 6:23 mark.
Â
The Big Red returns home for its next four games, starting with a visit from Clarkson at 7 p.m. Friday in a rematch of a 2014 ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinals series at Lynah Rink.
