#6/6 Miami Uses Early Goals to Top Men's Hockey, 3-0

Box Score (PDF)

ESTERO, Fla. — The men's hockey team's scoring drought in Florida continued Monday as #6/6 Miami surged to a three-goal lead in the first 22 minutes and held the Big Red at arm's length for a 3-0 victory in the consolation game of the Florida College Hockey Classic at Germain Arena. Sophomore goaltender Mitch Gillam stopped all 13 shots he faced in a relief appearances, finishing the two-game event without surrendering a goal on 37 shots over nearly five periods plus an overtime session.

Cornell (5-6-2) finished fourth at the event, falling to 10-15-5 in its 15 years of attendance since the tournament's inception. Yet Monday's effort was notably better than in Sunday's scoreless tie against Lake Superior State in the first round. The Big Red was more physical and generally played with more pace, though it wasn't able to generate nearly as many scoring chances. Miami goaltender Jay Williams made 15 saves for the shutout.

Kevin Morris got Miami (12-6) on the board 2:56 into the game on a power-play strike. The RedHawks doubled their lead on fluky goal with 1:42 left before the first intermission when defenseman Taylor Richart skated through three zones before releasing a fluttering shot that skipped off the ice and over the glove of starting goaltender Hayden Stewart. Miami then ended the freshman's night 1:36 into the second period on Florida native Devin Loe's first goal of the season.

The Big Red was shut out in consecutive games for the first time since December 1963 — a stretch of 1,560 games. Cornell is continues its stretch of six consecutive games away from home with ECAC Hockey contests Friday, Jan. 9 at St. Lawrence and Saturday, Jan. 10 at Clarkson.
