Polo Teams Face Big Challenges At Home vs. Virginia

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's and men's polo teams will face rival Virginia in a key midseason test when the Cavaliers visit Oxley Equestrian Center this weekend. The women will square off on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m., while the men will play on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

The women are 10-3 on the year and will be meeting a Cavalier team it has faced in each of the last three national championship matches. Cornell leads the all-time series 91-33-2, though the teams have already split two meetings this season. Virginia earned a 12-5 triumph in the season opener on Oct. 18 before the Big Red picked up a 19-14 victory in the finals of the Bill Field Invitational on Nov. 24.

While both teams have had a good run at Oxley, the women bring a perfect 9-0 home record into the weekend and will attempting to top the Cavaliers for the second time this season in the home barn. Head coach David Eldredge will also be looking for his 450th on the sidelines with the women and brings a 449-124-17 (.775).

The perennial national championship contenders on the men's side have played at least twice in each season dating back to the 1978-79 season with the exception of last year, when the teams only played once. Virginia leads the series 64-42-2 and holds an 18-game win streak in the series dating back to a 16-15 Big Red victory in the 2008 national semifinals. The Cavaliers have won both meetings so fat this season, dropping Cornell 12-8 in the season opener in Charlottesville on Oct. 18 and 19-18 in the final of the Bill Field Invitational on Nov. 24 in Ithaca.

At 8-3, including 7-2 at home in Oxley, the men's team has a full lineup and is out to make a run toward the program's seventh national championship appearance in the last 10 years has begun. Eldredge has guided the Big Red to a 404-169-8 record (.702) in his 28 years on the sidelines with the men and 853-293-25 record (.739) combined with the men's and women's teams.
