ITHACA, N.Y. – In the end,
Andy Iles and his teammates took a final celebratory lap around Lynah Rink. The senior goaltender and Ithaca native was last on line, taking a swan dive at center ice and kissing the Cornell logo in his final game in front of the Lynah Faithful. He had junior
Brian Ferlin to thank for the 1-0 overtime win.
Ferlin scored 12:32 into overtime for the game's lone goal and Iles, Cornell's all-time leader in saves, picked up his first shutout of the season with 23 saves to lift the Big Red in Game 3 of a best-of-three ECAC Hockey Championship quarterfinal series at Lynah Rink. Cornell (17-9-5) advances to the semifinals, where it will face top-seeded Union at 4 p.m. on Friday at 1980 Olympic Rink - Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid.
The winning goal was an exercise in Cornell hockey. The Big Red was in the Golden Knights' end continuously for 1:37, pinning the visitors in their own end for a lengthy shift while sending a fresh line over the boards while maintaining possession. With Clarkson's line fatigued, Cornell won a handful of board battles. The last one allowed
Cole Bardreau and
Jake Weidner to work the puck back to
Joakim Ryan at the right point. As he drifted toward the middle, he found
Clint Lewis on the left side. The freshman defenseman whipped a perfect pass between the legs of a Clarkson forward to Ferlin on the edge of the crease off the post to Clarkson goalie Steve Perry's right. With his back toward goal, Ferlin quickly turned and fired a point-blank shot that squeaked under Perry's left arm and trickled over the goal line.
It was Ferlin's team-leading 13
th goal of the season, and it was his sixth game-winner of the campaign. Lewis' assist was also his first on the collegiate level. Iles earned his ninth career shutout, though his 23 saves were joined by 27 blocked shots from the skaters in front of him. It was Cornell's first shutout of the season, marking the 19
th consecutive season that the Big Red has had at least one shutout – covering the entirety of
Mike Schafer's tenure as the program's head coach.
Despite playing its sixth game in 10 days, Clarkson (21-17-4) had plenty of jump. The Golden Knights had the first six shots on goal in the game, but perhaps the biggest save of the first period came when Bardreau sprawled to the ice to block Troy Josephs' bid at a gaping net on a rebound attempt at the 12:47 mark.
Freshman goalie Steve Perry was terrific for the Golden Knights, finishing the night with 25 saves. He made a save on a quick shot from Bardreau in the right circle with 2:04 to play in the second period, then flashed out his left pad to kick away Ferlin's shot on the rebound. Clarkson responded with a pair of quality chances in the waning moments of the period, but Ryan blocked Matt Zarbo's wraparound attempt and Will Frederick's jam-shot from the top of the crease was ruled no-goal after a lengthy review.
The Golden Knights had another close call with 12:30 to play in the third period when a funny bounce off the glass sent DiNallo away on a breakaway. He attempted to beat Iles with a shot between the legs, but the Big Red's goalie smothered the puck. There was some controversy as he slid backward toward the goal line with the puck still underneath his pads, but the referee closest to the play ruled he was pushed into the net by Christian Powers' poke at the pads.
That set the stage for overtime, which was also needed the last time the Big Red played a Game 3 at home. Just as in 2009 against Quinnipiac, Cornell emerged with the victory. The Big Red advances to the league championship weekend for the sixth time in the last seven years.
