Baseball Splits Double Header With George Washington

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ARLINGTON, Va. – After falling in extra innings in the first game of a double header, the Bi g Red baseball team stormed back to earn the 6-2 win in the nightcap.  Cornell improves to 3-2 on the year and will face the Colonials again tomorrow in a pair of games slated to begin at noon.

Game 1: George Washington 4, Cornell 3 (Nine Innings) (BOX SCORE)
After scoring runs in each of the first two innings before extending its lead to 3-1 in the top of the fifth, George Washington notched a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to force extra innings.

First baseman Ryan Plantier went 3-for-3 at the plate and drew walk, while designated hitter Spencer Scorza went 2-for-4, scored a run and registered an RBI. 

Brent Jones pitched six innings, gave up three run on three hits while striking out four and walking one. Kellen Urbon picked up the loss.

Cornell scrapped together a run in the first inning when Tom D'Alessandro was hit by a pitch and then stole second base. Chris Cruz then reached on an error and D'Alessandro crossed the plate to put the visitors up, 1-0.

After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, the Big Red extended its lead to 2-0 when Scorza doubled to right field, advanced to third on a pair of walks by Ben Swinford and JD Whetsel, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by D'Alessandro.

The Colonials got one back in the bottom of the fourth but Cornell went up, 3-1, in the top of the fifth. Cruz reached base on a single to right, then advanced to second when Matt Hall laid down a sacrifice bunt. Cruz eventually scored when Scorza singled through the right side.

GW knotted the game at 3-3 with a big bottom of the sixth and went on to win it in the bottom of the ninth. The decisive run was scored by Bobby Campbell, who reached base after being hit by a pitch. 

Game 2: Cornell 6, George Washington 2 (BOX SCORE)
George Washington carried some momentum into the second game, as Ryan Xepoleas scored in the bottom of the first after leading off the inning with a double.

Cornell stormed back in the fourth as Ryan Karl doubled to right field to drive home Cruz and then Hall scored a single by Scorza. The Big red tacked on another run in the top of the fifth as Whetsel manufactured a run by stealing home after doubling to left field and then advancing to third base on a GW error.

The Colonials got one back in the bottom of the fifth, but that was as good as it would get for the home team as Cornell plated one more run in the top of the sixth and two more in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Karl led the Big Red's offense in the second game, going 2-for-2 with two RBI, while Plantier and Scorza each drove in a run for Cornell. 

Nick Busto earned the win after pitching five innings for Cornell and allowing two runs on three hits, while striking out three and walking one.
