ITHACA, N.Y. – Rising sophomore All-American
Gabe Dean made the most of his first international tournament, earning the bronze medal at 84kg at the 2014 FILA Junior World Championships in early August in Zagreb, Croatia.
Dean rolled through the first two rounds with a 10-0 victory over Selimmuhamet Muhadeyyev of Turkmenistan, then won a 12-2 tech fall matchup over Adris Ruhle of Latvia. Dean dropped a tight 7-6 decision to finalist Azamat Dauletbekov of Kazakhstan before coming back in the repechage with a 14-3 win over Grece's Pavlos Sotiriadis. He claimed the injury default over Nuramagomed Gadzhiyev of Azerbaijan in the third-place match.
Dean had an epic season as a freshman in 2013-14, earning Ivy League and EIWA Rookie of the Year accolades and finishing as an All-American with a third-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships. The unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection had a spectacular rookie season, going 40-3 with his only losses coming to the top two wrestlers at his weight class. Dean won titles at the Cliff Keen Last Vegas Invitational, the EIWA tournament, the New York State Intercollegiates and the Southern Scuffle. His signature win came against Penn State's two-time defending national champion Ed Ruth at the Southern Scuffle, avenging one of his two losses from early in the season and snapping Ruth's 84-match win streak dating back to 2011. It earned him U.S.A. Wrestling and EIWA Wrestler of the Week honors and he was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Faces In The Crowd" for the Jan. 20, 2014 issue.
