The Big Red (4-1) has gotten off to a fast start in 2014, mostly on the feet of the dynamic duo of Crowell and Growney up top. The two did not disappoint in this one, combining for all three goals and seven points in the contest.
The duo teamed up on the winner in the waning moments of the second half. Growney received the ball on a throw-in and muscled her way for position at the right side of the box. She made a quick move to shake loose of her defender and beat her to the end line, before whipping a sensational cross into the box. Crowell rose to meet it with her head, driving a bullet into the top-left of the cage for her fourth goal on the young season.
It was the second goal of the half for Crowell, as she earlier scored a sneaky goal off a free kick from just outside the box. The Big Red drew a foul just outside the top of the box to the left of goal. While players looked to get organized, the sophomore decided to play the ball quick, whipping a looping shot just inside the far right post, past Buffalo keeper Laura Dougall.
The Big Red started slow against the Bulls, falling behind in 12
th minute of the contest. Celina Carrero sent a a cross from right to left across the box, connecting with Julia Benati at the far post. Benati settled the ball and then ripped a shot into the near side.
Cornell equalized in the 56
th minute. Sophomore
Meera Marhoefer collected a ball at the top-right of the box and fired a rocket shot toward the cage. Dougall got a glove to the ball, but gave up a juicy rebound. Growney was the plunderer, streaking in and depositing the ball into the yawning cage for her third goal on the year.
The Big Red pulled ahead on the first of Crowell's two goals in the 64
th minute, but could not hold the lead. Buffalo equalized just 3:28 later, as Kassidy Kidd played a perfect through ball to Katie Roberts. The Bulls forward had nothing but green grass in front of her and chipped a ball over sophomore goalkeeper
Kelsey Tierney as she came out to cut the angle. This set the stage for Crowell's heroics.
Tierney made five saves to notch her fourth victory on the year.
The Big Red returns to action on Sunday, as the team makes the short trip to take on Binghamton. Opening kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Bearcats Sports Complex in Vestal.
