POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Freshman forward Paige DeLoach scored in 59th minute and sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Tierney needed to make just one save in the women's soccer team's 1-0 victory Sunday at Marist.

Playing in just her second collegiate game, DeLoach came on the field as a substitute less than two minutes before the goal. She converted a cross from the right side by sophomore forward Caroline Growney, who has now factored into both Cornell goals on the weekend after scoring in the second overtime period of Friday's game at Massachusetts. Head coach Patrick Farmer said Growney was the Big Red's player of the match.

Neither team found much of an offensive rhythm in the first half, with just a combined five shots attempted and just one of those shots on target – a 34th-minute offering from Big Red freshman Meera Dheer, which was stopped. Cornell (2-0) absorbed 10 Marist (1-2) fouls in the opening 45 minutes.

Tierney's lone save came in the 54th minute, then the Big Red started to put heat on the Red Foxes. Sophomore Meera Marhoefer and Growney forced saves from Marist keeper Andrea Wicks just a few minutes before DeLoach broke through with the winner.

The Big Red didn't even surrender so much as a shot attempt the rest of the way. Just like in Friday's victory, senior co-captain Sydney Cetrullo, junior Charlotte Tate, sophomore Aimee Tavzel and freshman Whitney Farber were the Big Red's back line from start to finish. It's the first time since 2005 that Cornell has opened the season with consecutive clean sheets.

Cornell will make its home debut next weekend by playing host to the Cornell Classic on Friday and Sunday at Berman Field. The four-team, four-game tournament will include Big Red games against Virginia Military Institute at 7 p.m. Friday and Temple at 3 p.m. Sunday.
