NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Cornell freshman
Kate Fitzpatrick registered a goal in the 22nd minute of action and the Big Red's smothering defense held it up as the Cornell field hockey team defeated Yale, 1-0, this afternoon at Johnson Field in New Haven, Conn.
With the win, Cornell improves to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League.
The Big Red put tremendous offensive pressure on the home team in the first half, taking seven shots and putting six on goal, including Fitzpatrick's goal, which came off a penalty corner when she converted a rebound off an Emillie Katz save.
Katz finished the game with six saves, five of which came in the first half.
For the game, Cornell held the 12-8 advantage in shots and the 5-2 edge in penalty corners. The Big Red defense was impressive, limiting Yale to just eight shots, none of which were on goals. Cornell goalie
Kelly Johnson earned her third shutout of the season without needing to make a save.
In the closing moments, Cornell players
Krysten Mayers (green) and
Isabel Josephs (yellow) were issued cards just 16 seconds apart, forcing the visitors to play down two players. When Mayers' penalty ended at the 69:08 mark, Cornell played the final 52 seconds of the game down one-man as Josephs continued to server her penalty. Despite the numbers advantage, Yale was unable to get the ball into Cornell's defensive end, going the final 13:54 without taking a shot.
The Big Red is back in action tomorrow when it takes on Patriot League foe Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
