(PDF)PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- A pair of Joe Swenson goals lifted Penn over men's soccer, 2-0, on Saturday night in the Big Red's first Ivy League contest of 2015.
Cornell (1-8-1, 0-1 Ivy) dominated play for much of the first half, with the Quakers (2-5-1, 1-0 Ivy) hardly seeing time in the Big Red's half of the field early on. Cornell earned three corners in the first 17 minutes of play and was moving the ball well in the final third. But one of Penn's few trips into Big Red territory in the first frame resulted in a goal from Swenson from the top of the box in the 30
th minute to put the Quakers ahead.
In the second half, Cornell's best look was a blast from sophomore
Jonathan Cullom in the 65
th minute that bounded just wide.
Before Swenson netted the insurance goal in the 82
nd minute, his second of the night, he looked to goal in the 74
th minute after freshman goalkeeper
Rhys Moller's save on Teddie Levenfiche rebounded into the box. Swenson sent the ball towards the open side of the net, but freshman defender
Ryan Bayne made an impressive stop at the goal mouth to keep the Big Red within one.
The Big Red returns to the friendly confines of Berman Field at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 when Harvard comes to town. The Big Red is 1-1-1 at home this season.
