(PDF)ITHACA, N.Y. — Despite dominating play and registering a season-high 18 shots, Cornell men's soccer fell to Harvard, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Berman Field. The Crimson had just five shots on the night.
The Big Red took control of play early, recording five shots and three corner kicks within the first 13 minutes of the game. Sophomore
Jonathan Cullom had a quality chance, sending a cross barely wide in the 10
th minute. In the 13
th minute, Crimson goalkeeper Evan Mendez threw the ball into play and freshman
Ryan Watters used his speed to beat the Harvard defender to the ball. Watters let a shot go and the defenders' block nearly sent the ball into the net.
In one of the Crimson's first trips to the Cornell half of the field, Sam Brown took a free kick from about 30 yards out that sailed unobstructed into the top right corner of the net to give Harvard the lead.
But the Big Red did not let up. Cullom registered another good look in the 21
st minute that Mendez had to scramble to collect. Junior
Liam Crotty added a trio of scoring chances before the half was over to give Cornell an 11-1 advantage in shots at the break.
The Big Red continued to press as the second half began, with junior
JJ Black sending a cross into a sliding
Chris St. Germain, who was obstructed by a Harvard defender. Junior
Eric Nuss also headed a shot just high off a corner kick early in the frame before the Crimson netted it's second goal when Jake Freeman sent a cross into Christian Sady, who slid into the box and slotted it home.
Cornell's sustained offensive pressure throughout the game was a team effort, with 10 different players recording shots. Cullom led the team with five, while Crotty had three and Watters and freshman
Walter Prince each had two.
The Big Red plays its final non-conference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday night when Colgate makes the short trip to Berman Field.
