WATERBURY, Conn. --- Cornell sprint football closed out the season with a 44-6 rout of Post on Saturday afternoon to finish 4-3 and in fourth place of CSFL.
Â
The Eagles scored first, when Jay'Len Mehan, one of the league's top receivers, ran for four yards with 9:01 to go in the first quarter. The Big Red blocked the kick attempt, allowing Cornell to take the lead with 4:39 remaining in the frame when freshman quarterback
Connor Ostrander ran for a yard and
Michael Zazzara's kick was good.
Â
It was all Cornell from there, with Post never again finding the end zone. On the Eagles' first drive of the second quarter, junior
Christopher D'Ambrosio sacked Post quarterback Greg Volpe for a loss of ten yards, forcing the Eagles to punt two plays later. The Big Red's ensuing possession resulted in senior
Benjamin Herrera running three yards to close an 80-yard drive with 4:28 left in the second quarter.
Â
Cornell would score again before the close of the half, with Ostrander getting his second of the night on a five-yard run to give the Big Red a 21-6 lead at the break.
Â
The second half was more Cornell dominance, with Ostrander and Herrera teaming up to get the Big Red downfield on the half's first drive before Ostrander connected with senior
Trevor Marrero for a 23-yard touchdown pass.
Â
The Cornell defense forced Post to go three-and-out on its next two drives. Ostrander launched a 10-yard pass to
Logan Stevenson and a 21-yard pass to
Kevin Nathanson midway through the third and then took to the ground, running four yards to score his third and put the Big Red ahead 35-6.
Â
Zazzara made a 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter, keeping the Big Red as the only team in CSFL to make all of its attempted field goals this season. Sophomore
Karriem Royster notched his first career touchdown, a nine-yard run, to close the scoring. A botched extra-point attempt left the final score at 44-6.
Â
The Big Red's defense was stingy all game, allowing just 103 rushing yards and 115 passing to Cornell's 445 all-purpose yards. D'Ambrosio once again led, posting five solo tackles and one assisted.
Â
The Big Red preferred the ground, running for 293 yards. Ostrander shone once again, going 9-for-13 and averaging 16.9 yards per completion.
Â
The win gave Cornell its first season over .500 since 2012, when the team also went 4-3.
