PRINCETON, N.J. – For the first time since the opening weekend of the 2015 field hockey season, the Big Red was held scoreless, as it fell to No. 20 Princeton on Bedford Field on the Tigers' campus. With the win, Princeton secures at least a share of the Ivy League title, while Cornell slips to 10-6 overall and 4-2 in Ivy League play.
In a game that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Tigers held the 14-8 advantage in shots, including a slim edge of 8-5 for shots on goals. The Big Red held the 7-4 edge in penalty corners.
Between the pipes, Princeton's Anya Gersoff made five saves to earn the win, while Cornell's
Kelly Johnson stopped four in the loss.
Princeton got on the board first in the 16th minute when Jane Donio-Enscoe scored off a cross-crease pass from Teresa Benvenuti.
Cornell had a great opportunity to tie on the game a penalty corner with under six minutes to go in the half, but Gersoff made an outstanding save on a shot by
Marisa Siergiej and moments later Ryan McCarthy scored to make it a 2-0 advantage just before the half.
With just over a minute to go before the break,
Katie Garrity had a great opportunity on a cross from
Katy Weeks, but once again Gersoff was up to the task with a pad save to preserve the Princeton lead.
Cornell picked up the pace in the early moments of the second half, but could not get a good scoring chance. Midway through the stanza, Princeton had several outstanding chances, but Johnson had a pair of point-blank saves to keep the Big Red in striking distance.
Maddie Copeland scored a pair of late goals to account for the 4-0 final.
Cornell will play its final game of the 2015 season when it travels to Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 7 at noon.
