HANOVER, N.H. - The only time the Big Red field hockey team led in today's contest at Dartmouth proved to be the only time that mattered, as
Katie Carlson's overtime goal handed Cornell the 5-4 victory. The Big Red came back three times in the game, including erasing a 4-2 Dartmouth lead in the final 9:21 of the contest to force overtime.
"Dartmouth came out with a lot of heart and played with a lot of emotion on their Senior Day," said head coach
Donna Hornibrook. "They were able to capitalize on an early defensive mistake and score right away, which only added to the energy they brought to the field. So I'm really pleased with our composure. It takes a lot for a team to get down three times and to come back and win. It was a wild one!"
With the win, the Big Red closes the 2015 season with an 11-6 record overall and a mark of 5-2 in the Ivy League, good for second place overall in the conference standings. Additionally, the 11 wins ties the school record for victories in a season, previously set three times (2008, 2010, 2014).
Taylor Standiford registered three assists in the game to break her own school record with 13 assists on the season. She finishes her career with three of the top 10 single-season marks in school history, as well as holding the career assist record with 40.
Krysten Mayers also tied a school record for goals in a single season when she scored in the 13th minute to tie the game for the second time at 2-2.
Marisa Siergiej scored twice to lead the Big Red and reach 10 goals for the third consecutive season. She ends her collegiate career ranked second overall in Cornell history with 38 career goals, just two shy of Linda Miller's school record.
Isabel Siergiej registered two assists on the day, while Carlson also tallied an assist in addition to her game-winning goal.
Katy Weeks scored once, tying the game at 4-4 with less than four minutes to play, and then set up the game winner, as she carried the ball into the circle and ripped a reverse-stick shot on goal that was saved by Paige Duffy before Carlson calmly collected the rebound and scored.
Duffy was incredible, finishing with 15 saves, and getting three defensive saves from her teammates as Cornell held the significant 23-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Big Red also had the significant edge in shots (29-7) and penalty corners (14-3).
"You can't ask a team to play any better offensively than we did today," says Hornibrook. "I'm really proud of how we battled back down the stretch."
Dartmouth (7-10, 2-5 Ivy) scored just 1:26 into the contest when Eliza Becker converted from close range to put the home team up early. Less than two minutes later,
Marisa Siergiej tied the game for the first time at 1-1 on a direct shot off a penalty corner.
The Big Green took the lead once again in the eighth minute with a penalty corner goal of its own, but again Cornell answered almost immediately with the record-tying goal from Mayers at the 12:03 mark.
The Big Red had numerous chances to take the lead with a 16-3 edge in shots over the first 35 minutes, but couldn't figure out Duffy and the teams entered the half knotted at 2-2.
Cornell continued to carry the run of play early in the second half, but back-to-back Dartmouth goals in a span of less than seven minutes put the home team up 4-2 with less than 13 minutes to play.
The Big Red's comeback started with
Marisa Siergiej's second goal of the game on a beautifully placed penalty corner sweep at the 60:31 mark to bring the visitors back within one at 4-3.
Less than six minutes later, Weeks ripped a penalty corner strike into the goal to set up the overtime.
