Volleyball Falls To Princeton, 3-0

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Big Red volleyball team fell to Princeton in straight sets (17-25, 15-25, 14-25) this evening in Newman Arena. Cornell will play its final game of the season, and honor senior Brittany Kalepa, tomorrow evening vs. Penn at 5 p.m. The Big Red's Senior Day celebration will take place following the contest.

Cornell (6-17, 2-11 Ivy) was led by Carla Sganderlla and Maddy Sroufe with eight and seven kills apiece. Setter Alyssa Phelps finished with 12 assists and a team-high 11 digs. Libero Natalie Danenhauer also finished with seven digs.

Princeton (14-8, 9-4 Ivy) hit .303 as a team thanks in large part to Brittany Ptak who posted 10 kills and no errors on 21 attempts for a .476 hitting percentage. Ptak was one of three Tigers to reach double-digit kills, a Kendall Peterkin and Cara Mattaliano finished with 12 apiece. Mattaliano posted a double-double with a match-high 14 digs, while setter Claire Nussbaum finished with 39 assists and 10 digs.

The Big Red battled Princeton early in the first set, as the teams traded points to a 13-12 Tigers' lead before three consecutive points put the visitors up, 16-12. A service error temporarily stopped Princeton, but back-to-back kills from Ptak and Mattaliano pushed the Tigers lead to five points (18-13) and the visitors rolled to the 25-17 victory.

In the second set, Princeton jumped out to an early 15-3 lead on the strength of Daschbach's serving, as the senior libero served 13 straight points with three aces. Cornell fought back to outscore the Tigers 12-10 from that point but it was too little, too late, as the Princeton won, 25-15.

The Tigers jumped out to another quick lead in the third set, going up 9-2 in the opening moments and eventually pushing its lead to double digits at 19-9. From there the visitors rolled to the 25-14 victory.
