HAMILTON, N.Y. —
Anthony Angello scored 1 minute, 10 seconds into overtime, to help the Cornell men's hockey team complete a comeback for a 3-2 victory on Saturday night at Colgate. It was the 250th regular-season ECAC Hockey victory in the career of head coach
Mike Schafer.
Reece Willcox started the winning play, quickly turning the puck up ice to send the Big Red away on the rush.
Jeff Kubiak turned the puck into the path of Angello, who entered the right circle and snapped a shot that tipped off a defender's stick and went through the legs of Colgate goalie Charlie Finn.
It's the second overtime win of the season already for Cornell (5-1, 3-1 ECAC Hockey), which started the year with
Christian Hilbrich's extra-time winner at Niagara on Oct. 30, and proved to be a happy homecoming for Angello, who hails from nearby Manlius.
The turning point of the game actually came back in the latter stages of the first period, when the trio of Willcox,
Dan Wedman and
Jake Weidner killed off 68 seconds of a two-man disadvantage with the Big Red already trailing by a goal. It helped minimize the damage of
an eventful first period in which Colgate was awarded all of the frame's five power plays — including two 5-on-3 advantages.
The Raiders scored first before the parade to the penalty box, with Tyson Spink taking advantage of a Big Red defenseman falling in the neutral zone and tucking in a backhand on a breakaway just 3:40 in.
The Big Red came back to tie the game on defenseman
Patrick McCarron's second goal of the weekend.
Mitch Vanderlaan worked the puck down low and
Jeff Kubiak sent a pass toward
Anthony Angello skating through the slot. Though the puck slid past Angello, McCarron gathered at the center point and picked a spot over Charlie Finn's blocker at the 15:35 mark. But within a couple minutes, Colgate used a two-man advantage to set up a Brett Corkey one-timer for a 2-1 lead at the 17:29 mark.
That effectively set the stage for the Big Red's improved play in the second period. Cornell had a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal in the period and ultimately had more possession, leading to a couple of its own power plays. The second was drawn by
Jared Fiegl on the forecheck. On the ensuing man advantage,
Ryan Bliss attempted a pass to
Matt Buckles in the high slot. The puck went off the toe of his stick, then was swept by a Colgate defender into Weidner's skates. With that defender charging hard, Weidner quickly swatted the puck back to Buckles for a one-timer over Finn's blocker to tie the game.
Cornell had its chances in the third period, but Finn was sharp. He flashed his left pad at the 6:43 mark to stop a Buckles shot from the circle on the rush, then he tracked
Holden Anderson's shot through traffic and didn't surrender a rebound at 10:33.
Mitch Gillam made 26 saves to earn the victory. The Big Red returns to ECAC Hockey action next weekend with an Ivy League trip to Yale at 7 p.m. Friday and Brown at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Notes* The 5-1 start is Cornell's best since it began the 2009-10 season with the same mark.
* Kubiak had a pair of assists to extend his points streak to six games.
* With the win, the Big Red swept the Raiders in consecutive regular-season games for the first time since Feb. 1-2, 2008.
