Women’s Hockey Scores Late To Tie In Battle With Colgate

Box Score (PDF)

ITHACA, N.Y. --- What was bound to be an even game between Cornell women's hockey and Colgate ended that way on the scoreboard Tuesday night. Senior Jess Brown scored for the Big Red with 17.6 seconds left to tie the game at the three and steal a point from the Raiders after a back-and-forth battle at Lynah Rink.

With Cornell goaltender Paula Voorheis out of the net in favor of an extra attacker, senior Taylor Woods sent a pass from the right circle to junior Hanna Bunton, whose shot slid across the goal mouth and onto Brown's stick. Brown circled into the left corner and took a shot from just above the goal line that snuck past Raiders goaltender Ashlynne Rando.

Brown's goal, her first of the season, capped a seesaw of a game that saw three ties, two lead changes and three video reviews.

"We knew it was going to be close," said head coach Doug Derraugh. "And it was back-and-forth. I thought it was a pretty entertaining game. We got up, they got up, and it just kind of went that way all night long."

Bunton put Cornell ahead early, netting her fifth goal of the season just 2:48 into the game. The play began when senior Cassandra Poudrier blocked a shot in front of the Cornell net. Poudrier controlled the puck and broke it out to Bunton on the right wing. Bunton made a move around a defender and put a high shot past Rando, giving the Big Red a one-goal lead that would last throughout the first period.

Bunton almost had another early in the second, ringing a shot off the post, before Cat Quirion tied the game for Colgate 6:44 into the frame. Annika Zalewski then picked up a rebound on the power play at 14:39 to put the Raiders ahead, 2-1.

Midway through the third period, it was Bunton again, picking up a rebound from a Kaitlin Doering shot and causing her teammates to celebrate, but the play was waived off by the official. After a video review, the no-goal call on the ice stood.

But Cornell (2-4-2, 1-2-2 ECAC Hockey) would tie it just moments later when freshman Lenka Serdar got the puck along the left boards and passed back to junior Sydney Smith on the point. Smith found freshman Christian Higham in the high slot and Higham put away her first of the season, bringing the Big Red even.

The Raiders (6-2-5, 0-1-4 ECAC Hockey) regained the lead 2:15 later, when Megan Sullivan's shot popped up high into the air and landed behind Voorheis. The goal was also reviewed and the officials once again stood by the on-ice call.

With about four minutes remaining, yet another play sent the officials into the video review room. A Cornell shot landed in the glove of Rando, but quickly came loose and rolled off her shoulder and into the net. The official had blown the whistle, and upon review, the play had been whistled dead before the puck landed in the net.

But the Big Red again made up for it with Brown's dramatic tying goal. Overtime saw quality chances from both sides, but neither could capitalize, giving Colgate its fifth tie of the season and preserving Cornell's 12-game unbeaten streak against the Raiders dating back to 2009.

The Big Red outshot Colgate 34-23 and Voorheis made 19 saves.

Cornell travels to Mercyhurst for a non-conference series this weekend, with games set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21.
