PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Pittsburgh raced out to a 16-2 lead and never took its foot off the gas as the Panthers topped Cornell 93-49 on Wednesday evening at the Petersen Events Center. The Panthers improved to 3-0, while the Big Red fell to 3-3.
Junior
JoJo Fallas had nine points and three assists and classmate
Robert Hatter had eight points, but Cornell shot just 30 percent from the floor overall and was outrebounded 47-31 by the Panthers, who had four double figure scorers.
Jamel Artis scored 21 points, five rebounds and four assists in the win for Pitt, while Chris Jones had 15, Michael Young had 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Damon Wilson scored 10 points with four helpers. The Panthers shot 52 percent from the floor and connected on 10-of-21 3-pointers (48 percent).
Pitt connected on 6-of-9 3-pointers in the first half and took advantage of nearly every Big Red mistake, physical or mental. The home team scored 14 points off eight Cornell turnovers, outrebounded the Big Red 24-19 and limited the Big Red to 7-of-33 shooting (21 percnet) while seemingly not allowing any uncontested shots in the first 20 minutes. Fallas scored nine of Cornell's 19 points and hit all three of his 3-pointers in the first half, but the rest of the team was 0-for-8 from beyond the arc and 4-for-27 from the field.
Artis had 18 points, four rebounds and three assists at the break, while Jones scored 12 points, grabbed three rebounds and had two steals. Both hit their only two 3-point attempts. Young chipped in six points, seven rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot.
Cornell missed its first 12 shots, and against a big, athletic team like Pitt, that is a recipe for disaster. The Big Red never really settled down in the first half, though most of that was due to Pitt's relentless rotation of size at all positions. The Big Red's starting lineup was held to a combined 1-for-21 shooting effort in the half thanks in large part to Pitt's length and strength.
After going down 16-2, an 8-0 run that featured a pair of Fallas 3-pointers gave Cornell a momentary reprieve, but Sheldon Jeter came back and hit a jumper on the other end. The Panthers never let another run come, pulling away to a 46-19 halftime lead.
Pitt's lead was as much as 48 points in the second half, never letting Cornell build any momentum and continuing to make shot after shot.
