NEW YORK — Junior
Mitch Gillam made 40 saves, including four while short-handed in overtime, and the Cornell men's hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five games by holding on for a 3-3 tie against Boston University on Saturday night. The game was the fifth edition of the biennial Red Hot Hockey series, with 17,154 fans on hand at Madison Square Garden.
Anthony Angello and
Trevor Yates scored goals in the second period to stake #15/16 Cornell (6-1-2) to a two-goal lead before #11/12 Boston University (7-4-3) tied the game early in the third.
Holden Anderson, then put the Big Red back in front, but the Terriers once again had the answer, tying the game on Jordan Greenway's first collegiate goal with 3:55 to go in regulation.
The Big Red then capped a 4-for-4 night on the penalty kill in overtime, with defenseman
Dan Wedman coming up big with a blocked shot. While BU went on to win an exhibition shootout to claim the Kelley-Harkness Cup, though the game is officially recorded as a tie.
Jeff Kubiak and
Teemu Tiitinen scored Cornell's shootout goals.
BU's first goal ended Gillam's shutout streak at 213 minutes, 17 seconds, which is third-longest in program history. Coming off consecutive road shutouts of Yale and Brown last weekend, Gillam was particularly strong in the second period Saturday, laying the groundwork for the Big Red's 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. Just 1:33 into the period, Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson led a short-handed two-on-one which was thwarted by the right pad of Gillam.
With the Big Red working on the same power play, Angello broke through with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Kubiak set up
Patrick McCarron for a shot from the center point, and from the middle of the slot Angello redirected the shot off the ice and over the right shoulder of BU goalie Connor LaCouvee.
Yates then doubled Cornell's lead at the 7:26 mark.
Alex Rauter sent Yates away on a partial breakaway, but LaCouvee made the save. Yates kept the play alive at the post, and Tiitinen attempted a back-handed wraparound at the opposite post. The puck ended up sliding across the crease and Yates roofed the rebound into the net for his third goal of the season.
Gillam made the lead stand up for the remainder of the period with a handful of terrific saves. BU had two power plays in the stanza, leading to a Greenway one-timer that was stopped from the right circle. About 30 seconds later, the Terriers set up Brandon Hickey for a huge shot from the point. Gillam made the save on that attempt, then again on Matt Lane's rebound by stretching to his left. His 40-save effort was the most posted by a Big Red goalie since Andy Iles did the same on Feb. 21, 2014 (a stretch of 47 games).
Cornell returns to ECAC Hockey play next weekend to wrap up the fall semester portion of its schedule. The Big Red starts off with a visit from St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Friday, then it hosts Clarkson at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.
