(PDF)HAMDEN, Conn. --- After Cornell women's hockey took an early 1-0 lead, Quinnipiac used a quick burst of three goals in less than five minutes in the second period to top the Big Red, 3-1, at High Point Solutions Arena on Saturday evening.
Junior
Hanna Bunton tallied her team-leading third goal of the season with 7:31 to go in the first period after classmate
Kaitlin Doering sent a centering pass to Bunton in the slot, who backhanded it over Quinnipiac goaltender Sydney Rossman's right shoulder. The Big Red's 1-0 lead was just the second time this season the Bobcats surrendered the first goal of the game.
Soon after a key kick save on Quinnipiac leading scorer Taylar Cianfarano by junior goaltender
Paula Voorheis, Cornell created an opportunity at the other end of the ice, with freshman
Christian Higham firing a shot and Rossman leaving the rebound loose in front with freshman
Lenka Serdar crashing the net.
In the waning moments of the first, the Bobcats came in on a two-on-one. Senior defenseman
Morgan Richardson slid in between the Qunnipiac forwards, cutting off the pass and deflecting the puck into the corner and out of danger.
Midway through the second period, Nicole Kosta opened the scoring for the Bobcats, coming out of the penalty box, gaining speed coming into the zone and netting the equalizer. Less than two minutes later, Meghan Turner worked the puck out from the corner and put away Quinnipiac's second goal of the evening. Cianfarano's power play tally gave the Bobcats a 3-1 lead before the period was over.
The Big Red dominated the early moments of the third period, keeping possession in the Bobcats defensive zone. Senior
Cassandra Poudrier found freshman
Pippy Gerace in front, whose deflection sailed just wide of the net. Senior
Taylor Woods had a pair of opportunities, with the Quinnipiac defenders backing into the zone and allowing Woods to get a clean shot off and pick up her own rebound.
Cornell kept pressure on late in the game, including a chance from Poudrier, who bodied her way in on Rossman, but Bunton's goal stood as the Big Red's only tally. Voorheis made 30 saves in the loss, which moved Cornell to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in ECAC Hockey play. Quinnipiac is now 6-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in ECAC Hockey.
The Big Red will take a brief break from conference play when it travels to Syracuse on Saturday, Nov. 14.
