ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team defeated a nationally ranked squad for the first time this season, toppling No. 57 George Washington on Saturday at Reis Tennis Center, 5-2.
Junior
Stefan Vinti and sophomore
Colin Sinclair teamed up to win in doubles, then went on to win their respective singles matches for Cornell (3-3), which entered the week at the 65th-ranked team in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
The Big Red started the day by securing the doubles point. Sinclair and senior
Sam Fleck teamed up to win at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, and senior
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen and Vinti won at the No. 3 position, 6-3.
In singles, Cornell swept the bottom half of the order in straight sets via Sinclair (No. 4),
Chris Vrabel (No. 4) and
Dylan Brown (No. 6). Vinti also won his match at the No. 1 position in three sets against Francisco Dias, who began the season ranked in the ITA's singles Top 125.
The Big Red will have next weekend off from competition before returning to play with three matches Feb. 13-15 at the ECAC Indoor Championships, hosted by Harvard.
