Women’s Lacrosse Overpowers Temple for Program’s 300th Victory

Box Score (PDF)

PHILADELPHIA – Cornell women's lacrosse kicked off the 2015 campaign in style, handing previously undefeated Temple its first loss of the season in emphatic fashion. The Big Red dispatched the Owls 17-8 at Geasey Field to score the program's 300th all-time victory. The game was called with 7:17 remaining in the second half because of unsuitable field conditions due to heavy snow that blanketed the field throughout the second half.

Senior co-captain Lindsay Toppe made quite a statement in the opening game of her Ivy League Attacker of the Year title defense. She led the Big Red with six points; scoring five goals and adding an assist. With the big game she moved into ninth on the program's all-time point list with 138, passing Robyn Ewing (1979-82; 133) and Tina Hennessey (1990-93; 134). She also blew past four Cornell greats to move into seventh on the team's all-time goals list with 110; passing Ria Tascoe (1989-92; 105), Ginny Miles (1999-2001; 106), Lori Wohlschlegel (1999-2002; 108), Robyn Ewing (1979-82; 109).

Sophomores Amie Dickson (4g-1a), Catherine Ellis (3g-2a) and junior Emily Tripodi (1g-4a) each added five points apiece to get off to flying starts this season. The four goals were a career high for Dickson, who scored five total in her rookie season. With the four assists, Tripodi moved past Jaimee Reynolds (1999-2002; 60) for fourth place on the porgram's all-time list with 63 career helpers.

Junior Shelby McNeilly and sophomore Kristy Gilbert each added a goal for the Big Red, while freshmen Ida Farinholt (1g-1a) and Taylor Reed each scored their first career goals in their collegiate debuts.

Both Cornell netminders saw action in the opener. Senior Carly Gniewek got the starting nod, but struggled to get stops with the team settling into its defensive sets in the first game action of the year. She allowed four goals in the opening 14:37 before ceding the net to sophomore Renee Poullott (W, 1-0) for the final 38:06 of action. Poullott played well, as the Big Red tightened up in the defensive third. She made five stops, while allowing four goals to notch the victory.

The Cornell (1-0) offense looked in midseason form from right off the hop in a dominant opening 30 minutes. The Big Red dominated possession in the first half, leading the Owls 14-to-4 in draw controls and 21-to-8 in shots to snag an 11-6 advantage on the scoreboard at the break.

Ellis and Toppe worked together on a nice combination play to score the Big Red's first goal of the fledgling campaign just 21 seconds into the contest. Toppe intercepted an Owl clear attempt and fed Ellis in the crease for sweet finish into the twine past Temple goal keeper Jaqi Kakalecik for an early 1-0 lead.

Temple (3-1) would respond with a pair of tallies on goals from sisters Nicole and Megan Tiernan to snatch the lead back for the home side.

The Big Red responded with a three-goal run of its own to grab a 4-2 lead, which the squad would not relinquish for the rest of the contest. The run was capped by Gilbert's goal as she took a beautiful cross-crease pass from Dickson and lasered  a rocket top shelf into the net.

Cornell capped the half with a three-goal run to take the five-goal lead into the break. The highlight of the run came when Dickson won a draw and went coast-to-coast on a 50 yard fast break sprint, before snapping the ball into the cage. Toppe finished the run with her fourth of the half.

The scoring pace slowed down in the second half, as a combination of weather and solid defense from the Big Red helped close out the victory. Dickson continued her stellar two-way play, finishing with four ground balls and four draw controls. Junior co-captain Brittany Marriott added three ground balls, while senior Sarah Hefner added one ground ball and four draw controls as well.

Cornell continued its run from the first half into the second. The Big Red tallied the first four goals of the second half to jump to a commanding 15-6 lead. The highlight of the run came from Tripodi, as she moved right across the crease and ducked under an oncoming defender, before firing shot into the net.

Dickson would cap the scoring for the Big Red, tallying the final two goals to cap her career day.

Cornell will now return home for its home opener against Albany on Saturday, February 28. Opening draw at Schoellkopf Field is slated for 2 p.m.
