ITHACA, N.Y. — Sophomores
Bernardo Casares Rosa and
Chris Vrabel teamed up win a doubles match, then proceeded to win their respective singles matches to help the men's tennis secure a 5-2 victory over Old Dominion on Friday night at Reis Tennis Center.
The victory marks the second time in as many weeks that Cornell (5-5), tabbed 58th in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association's national rankings, defeated a nationally ranked team at Reis. The Big Red defeated then-No. 27 Penn State last Saturday, and Old Dominion (7-1) entered this weekend both undefeated and ranked 59th.
Casares Rosa and Vrabel won their match at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, then the Big Red clinched the opening point of the match when the No. 3 pairing of junior
Stefan Vinti and senior
Quoc-Daniel Nguyen won in a tiebreaker.
All three of Cornell's singles victories came in straight sets, with the last match abandoned on account of Cornell having already clinched the decision. Vrabel won at No. 5, giving him five victories in his last five matches played to completion. Casares Rosa won his third straight at No. 3, and sophomore
Colin Sinclair had the tidiest victory with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 4. Vinti also went on to win at the No. 2 position.
Cornell will have next weekend off before resuming play Saturday, March 14 at Binghamton.
