Softball Has Win Streak Snapped Despite Late Comeback At GW

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A late Cornell rally fell just short as the Big Red saw its four-game win streak snapped in an 8-7 defeat at George Washington on Wednesday evening at GW Softball Field. The Big Red fell to 8-11 on the season, while the Colonials improved to 16-13.

The Big Red pounded out 11 hits and scored six times in its final two at bats, including two in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, Cornell needed three to extend the game and stranded two runners on in the final frame.

Cornell showed tremendous fight despite the loss, with freshman Karlie Mellott leading the way at the top of the lineup. The rookie extended her hit streak to 16 games, tying her for the second-longest in school history, as part of a 2-for-2 day with three runs scored. She reached base all five times to the plate, walking three times as well. Emily Weinberg, Michiko McGivney and Sophie Giaquinto each went 2-for-4 at the plate with McGivney driving in a pair of runs.

Meg Parker took the loss after allowing five earned runs and five hits in five innings, striking out six along the way. Maddie Orcutt hurled the final frame.

Victoria Valos led the Colonials with a 3-for-3 day at the plate with four RBI and Paige Kovalsky went the distance in the circle for the win, with only three of her seven runs allowed being charged as earned.

The Big Red returns to Ivy League action on Friday, April 3 when it visits Harvard for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
