ITHACA, N.Y. — The men's tennis team earned its first 7-0 Ivy League victory in nine years on Saturday, when it swept nationally ranked Brown at Reis Tennis Center to even its league record with three matches remaining in the regular season.
Cornell (10-7, 2-2), which is ranked 51st in the country this week by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, cruised to victories in all three doubles matches to take an early lead. Two singles matches were then decided in straight sets, including senior
Alex Sidney at the No. 6 spot and classmate
Chris Vrabel at No. 4. Vrabel has now won 12 straight singles matches, dating back to January.
The remaining four matches required a third set, though senior
Sam Fleck needed just two additional games to clinch the match at the No. 1 position when his opponent retired. Sophomore
Colin Sinclair was the only won to play a complete third set, while sophomore
Bernardo Casares Rosa and junior
Stefan Vinti each won in super tiebreakers.
The victory was Cornell's first by a 7-0 margin in Ivy League play since April 8, 2006 against Dartmouth. It was the first time 61st-ranked Brown (15-4, 1-2) has been defeated by that score this season. It's also the Big Red's fifth consecutive victory over the Bears in the all-time series.
Cornell wraps up the weekend at 1 p.m. Sunday against Yale. The match at Reis Tennis Center is free to attend and open to the public. Live scores will also be posted
