PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The women's tennis team kept pace in the Ivy League hunt on Saturday with a 4-3 victory over Brown at Pizzitola Sports Center. Freshman Lizzie Stewart notched the clinching point with her 6-4, 6-4 victory in No. 4 singles.
 
Cornell (9-6, 3-1 Ivy League) remains tied for second place in the Ivy League standings. First-place Princeton survived a match against Dartmouth, 4-3, to stay at the front of the pack with a 4-0 record. Columbia defeated Yale on Saturday to move to 3-1 alongside Cornell.
 
The Big Red started Saturday's match by going down to the wire to win the doubles point. Brown (8-8, 1-2) won the No. 3 match, but Cornell's No. 1 tandem of junior captain Dena Tanenbaum and sophomore Alexandra D'Ascenzo pulled the portion of the match even with an 8-6 victory. That left the balance of the opening point in the hands of the freshman No. 2 pairing of Lizzie Stewart and Priyanka Shah, and they came through in a tiebreaker to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead.
 
After the Bears won the first singles match to be completed, the Big Red won the next three in straight sets to clinch the match and avenge a loss to Brown earlier in the season in a non-league meeting. D'Ascenzo gave the Big Red a 2-1 lead with her 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot. After Cusick won her ninth straight singles match from the No. 3 position, Stewart pushed Cornell's lead to 4-1 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Nikita Uberoi at No. 4.
 
Cornell has now won three of the last four Ivy League matches between the teams. Just two of the last 17 meetings between the squads has featured a margin of victory greater than two points. The Big Red returns to action at noon Sunday at Yale.
