Albany Answers Softball's Surge With Doubleheader Sweep

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Twice Albany drew first blood. Twice Cornell answered to tie. Twice Albany landed the last blow. The Great Danes swept a Wednesday afternoon twinbill over Cornell at Albany Field, topping the Big Red 10-4 in game one, then 2-1 in eight innings in the second contest. Cornell dropped to 9-20, while Albany improved to 21-10.

Game One
After falling behind 4-0 after three innings, Cornell rallied to tie, but the Great Danes took control immediately after and cruised to a 10-4 win.

Albany scored two in the first and one run in each of the second and third innings before Cornell answered back. The Big Red used five hits, including two-run doubles by both Taylor Goodin and Chloe Pendergast, to get right back in it. The Great Danes took the lead for good in the fourth and scored four more in the fifth to seal the victory.

Michiko McGivney was 2-for-3  as the lone Big Red player with multiple hits in the contest. She also stole a base. Sierra Stone and Katie Carmichael each saw time in the circle, with Stone picking up the loss after surrendering six runs in 3.1 innings of work.

Game Two
Like in game one, Cornell tied the game after Albany drew first blood. Just like in game one, the Great Danes struck last.

Cornell scraped together a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game at 1-1, but Albany scored with two outs in the eighth to hand freshman Maddie Orcutt the hard-luck loss.

Orcutt scatted five hits and seven walks over 7.2 innings of work. She also struck out four while allowing just one earned.

After threatening in the fifth with the bases loaded and one out, the Big Red finally broke through in its last ups. Meg Parker and Jessica Bigbie singled to lead off the inning, and after a passed ball brought Parker to third, Leanne Iannucci's flyball to left-center was just far enough that Parker was able to knot the game.

Playing the international tiebreaker, Albany sacrificed their free baserunner from second to third and then scored on a walk-off sacrifice fly after the Big Red went down in order in the top of the eighth.

Cornell returns to action on Saturday, April 18 at 12:30 p.m. against Ivy League South Division foe Columbia.
